Welcome to NY.
There are just so many things to do in NYC that you can have a good time where ever you go. However, if you want a certain type of amenity,(say a temple near by) are looking for acess to certain foods or are on a budget, you can narrow your search and greatly increase your enjoyment of the visit.
There are several types of hotels in NYC. Even the Hilton's and Marriotts vary greatly in amenities and location. A few blocks can mean a great deal in terms of safety and access to transportation. There are business hotels and luxury hotels and economy suite hotels in the same area. If you are coming in for work, it may be important to have a good restaurant in the hotel or room service. If you are coming for pleasure, you can be more creative in choosing a place to stay. There are wonderful small hotels that cater to the international set that are more sophisticated, albeit costly.
The hotels in the theater district are for tourists. If you like the tourist experience, prefer to be on a tour bus and like eating at chain restaurants, that's fine.
As for action, it depends on what you mean. Are you looking for museums, clubs, French restaurants or art galleries, shopping or networking?
If you can answer a few questions, I can suggest some better small hotels in neighborhoods that offer more of the authentic New York experience.
What is your budget? Are you traveling with children? Do you have any diet preference? Are you looking for daytme activities or night life?
