I agree, it is better to find your way around the city before signing a lease. One block over can make a big difference. Williamsburg is more artsy and Astoria is more neighborhood. Both are convenient to Manhattan. If you aren't concerned about getting into the city too much, there are nicer neighborhoods for work at home living, especially if food and entertainment is important to you.
