History

The Evoluent VerticalMouse was patented in 1994. The Evoluent Vertical mouse has a unique design that keeps the forearm and wrist in a neutral, hand-shake position, also called power grip position, rather than in a palm-down position that is required with an ordinary computer mouse. This handshake position has been coined the "vertical position". Since that time, the Evoluent VerticalMouse has gone through more product research, design and development and has been revised to be released as the Evoluent Vertical Mouse 2 in 2002. The goal of the designer and unique computer mouse is to help more people “cure and prevent computer mouse injuries”.

Evoluent Vertical Mouse Where Design Meets Function:
Ergonomic experts recommend the Evoluent VerticalMouse for all computer users. One of the biggest problems in computer use is a poor fitted computer mouse. If you do not properly fit your computer mouse to your hand, you may be causing excessive strain, fatigue and stress to your hand and wrist muscles and joints.

The Evoluent VerticalMouse 2 supports your hand in a fully upright handshake position that eliminates the forearm twisting required by ordinary mice. Ergonomically, this is the power position for the wrist and hand. This power position is when the grip is strongest and the stress on the joints and tendons is least. Repetitive mouse activities out of the power position may result in cumulative trauma or pain. This power position is also the optimal position for mouse utilization and can maximize muscle strength and reduced muscle fatigue and injury. Properly fitting the computer mouse to your hand is one of the easiest, most economical and effective solutions for improving workstation ergonomics.

Why the "Vertical Position"?
Clinical studies have shown that the wrist and hand muscles are strongest in this vertical handshake/ power grip position, as the joints and tendons are in the most neutral position. They are strongest and there is least amount of force and pressure on the tendons, ligaments, joints and carpal tunnel. When the position of the wrist and forearm deviates from this power grip or handshale position, the hand loses upto 50% of its strength and the strain to the muscles and tendons increases (they are working harder and getting less of a result) and the pressure inside the carpal tunnel also increases. This vertical position reduces the effort of the muscles and tendons and relieves the compression on the nerves in the forearm that may become pinched during long hours of computer mousing when the forearm position is palm-down.

Ergonomic Design

The Evoluent VerticalMouse 2 is about the same height and width of a traditional computer mouse. The Evoluent VerticalMouse even looks very much like a computer mouse that has been positioned on its side. The most obvious difference from a traditional computer mouse is in the height and placement of the buttons. The buttons are placed on the outside edge of the mouse with an indentation for the thumb on the inside edge. The Evoluent Vertical Mouse contains 5 buttons compared to the traditional computer mouse that has 2 or 3. There are three standard-sized buttons along the outside edge, along with a scroll wheel along the outside edge between the top and middle button. Additionally there is a long, thin oval-shaped button in the thumb indentation along the inside edge of the mouse. The top button performs the traditional left click functions. The middle button performs the traditional right click functions. The scroll wheel performs the traditional scroll functions. The remaining bottom button and thumb indentation button are for programmable functions. All five buttons are programmable with 59 different functions available through free shareware. Ergonomically, all 5 of these buttons are easy to activate and require only a light pressure to activate. However this required pressure is sufficiently firm in order to prevent accidental mouse clicks, thus controlling computer mouse errors.

Eliminates Arm Twisting: The patented shape supports your hand in a fully upright handshake position that eliminates forearm twisting. Many users said the Evoluent Vertical Computer Mouse cured their wrist or arm pain. An ordinary horizontal computer mouse requires your forearm to twist away from its natural position.

Reduces Hand Movements: The Evoluent Vertical Computer Mouse 2 does not move sideways when clicking with normal force because the thumb naturally opposes the fingers. Pointer control is as accurate as any other good computer mouse.

Offers Effortless / Easy Clicking: The button force is light for easy clicking, but still firm enough to avoid accidental actuation.

Benefits of Evoluent Vertical Mouse 2:
-The unique ergonomic design is of the Evoluent VerticalMouse 2 is extremely comfortable to hold and to manipulate, it fits the contour of your hand nicely so that effort, pain and stress are reduced.
-The activation of the buttons and scrolling wheel is smooth, so that using your computer mouse is easy and effortless. In addition the button activation and use is similar to a traditional computer mouse so that your adjustment time is short, usually it taks about 1-2 weeks to get used to the Evoluent VerticalMouse design when switching over.
-The Evoluent Vertical Mouse offers an elegant, stylish appearance in a professional black matte with a soft-touch coating and choice of glossy black or silver buttons. Silver is availabel in right hand only.
-The ergonomic design of the "vertical" handshake position maintains the wrist and forearm in a neutral position, the power position, so that your hand is strongest. This is important because it reduces the stress and work your muscles and tendons need to do and relieves pressure within the carpal tunnel.
- Evoluent VerticalMouse is considered a high definition computer mouse , this is important because it easilty moves the cursor across the screen with relatively smaller movements when compared to a traditional computer mouse. This means less work for you.
-Evoluent Vertical Mouse 2 comes highly adaptable with programmable buttons with upto 59 setting options allows you to adjust and customize your computer mouse to best fit your needs, and builds in inherent efficiencies by reducing the number of clicking operations.

-Evoluent Vertical Mouse 2 uses a USB port for easy installation. A USB to PS/2 converter is provided for those who do not use a USB port.
