Thanks to Gunil for kicking off this thread, and to Scott for emailing out a reminder to contribute.
I founded SAND Services Inc. back in 2002 with the idea of creating a model for software development automation, and using that technology to build products for ourselves and our clients. Since then we've built a few of both, and the approach seems to be working and adaptable across the changes of technology over time.
My latest product idea is being developed as a separate company. I expect to be able to report on that in more detail in the coming months.
Lessons that are foremost in my mind at the start of this venture are:
1. Always have a plan B. Execute on Plan A, but be prepared to switch to plan B, or C. Your job is to get there, and with only one path you are relying on luck.
2. Revenue inflow is *always* challenging. Try to anticipate the ways it will fail to happen and be prepared (see 1). If at all possible try to always have more than one source.
3. Enjoy. Seriously. If you are not going to enjoy building your business and continue to be psyched about the effect it will have on your customers and the world as a whole, then pick something else to do. Time is not infinite.
4. Don't go it alone. Have at least one other person you are working with to realize the vision.
Hope that helps. Best of luck to all.
cheers, -ep
