Do Web Directories Have Any Value | Views: 467 |

Pete Hollier | | Web Directory submission is and unfortunately should be a part of any web site promotion initiative.
It's common knowledge that inbound links improve ranking in Search Engine results.
But for this to happen inbound links are evaluated by Search Engines for quality and relevance.(Google does put the most emphasis on linking strategies)
What value do these directory links really have. DMOZ has an excellent reputation but the others, well I just don't know.
I guess I am fed up with submitting to a directory and being asked to pay a fee of anywhere from $5.00 to whatever for a link that won't ever be used to get a visitor to my or one of my clients sites.
As if Google or other Search Engines don't know I only paid for this link surely they place no value on these links. Also Google takes a dim view of paid links which can get you de-listed. Why I don't know it seems to me an Adword ad with Google is a paid link. Just a wee bit of hypocrisy
Does anyone use any web directories? I know I never do!
Pete

Reg Charie | | After much monitoring of web stats I have concluded that the small (generalized) web directories are as useful as lead balloons.
I am judging this solely on the amount of visitors sent to the sites registered and ignoring any page rank that Google *might* attribute.
Results show that most listings see a visit shortly after placement, probably from the script checking the newly registered site, and then nothing.
The exceptions to this are in the focused directories such as the ones hosted by product or service specific portal sites.
Sites like Thomas Register for business, (http://www.thomasnet.com/), Adobe's Photographer's Directory, (http://www.photographersdirectory.adobe.com/), and tourism portals such as Pet Friendly, (http://www.petfriendly.ca/) do work well.

Kurt Schweitzer | | I agree with Reg - the only directories that have any value are those that are specialized, based on industry, location, or a vendor/client relationship.
I haven't submitted a website to a general directory since the beginning of the millennium, yet I have reasonable search rankings and receive a fair amount of traffic from the directories in which my sites are listed. I've also found my site listed in several "general" directories without any effort (or payment) on my part.
By the way, since I don't use any general directories myself, the only way I know I'm listed in one is either a) someone told me, or b) a Google Alert notified me.

Michael Lemm | | I agree with Reg and Kurt .... relevancy of the directory in relation to your website content is key. The more targeted, specialized, etc. the better.
Instead of website directories ... you may consider article directories to establish more targeted or relevancy focused links via viral publication of your articles (with your website embedded in the author box of course). Focus your article content on a specific subject relevant to your website ..... submitted to a targeted category ..... and repeat regularly (say 1-2 a week at least).

Lindy Asimus | | Kurt I've got to ask - if you have "never submitted a website to a general directory since the beginning of the millennium", how do you know?
Reg has stated that some actually are useful.
