Althea Conklin | | As Scott said, it is the open source version of Microsoft's Office group. The benefit to having Open Office (other than the fact that it is free and backed by a reliable group of developers) is that it is compatible with all Microsoft Office applications. So if you buy a new computer with, say, Vista Home Premium (which does NOT include Microsoft Office products), you could download Open Office for free and still exchange information with other Microsoft users. Some folks actually prefer Open Office to Microsoft Office or Wordperfect Office. But, since it is free, why not download it and see what you think? You have nothing to lose.
I believe the world of computing is becoming more focused upon mobility. Did you know that there are three times as many folks using cell phones in the world than desktop computers? According to Google's own research, that's true - three times as many cell phones in the world as computers. I was truly amazed to learn that.
Thanks to Google, the open source world is poised to take a giant leap forward with the promotion of Android - the open source operating system for cell phones. That means more folks are going to be computing with cell phones than ever before. And, they will be doing it thanks in part to a FREE operating system.

Ashish Belagali | | At Acism, we internally exchange documents with each other in open document formats (I had read a news item that they were going to be supported by Microsoft as well).
We create openoffice documents, then export them to pdf (a built in functionality) and send to the outside world. Alternatively, we have the choice of using MS office file formats as well.
