OBESITY & EXERCISE

It is a general belief that obesity can be treated by exercise alone. This is a wrong notion. . The amount of exercise required to reduce even a kilo of fat is tremendous. when a person is overweight by 14 kg, his heart has to do double the work than if he is at optimum weight. This means such a person climbing one floor will feel the exertion as if he has gone up 2 floors. So excessive amount of exercise would be harmful and may give rise to heart disease and joint troubles, etc .
Exercise has no local effect on the fat e.g you want to reduce the fat on thighs, any exercise for the thighs will not reduce the fat there, as only the muscles move the part and not the fat . People wrongly believe that exercise firms up and tones the fat. NO . Only the muscles can be toned up, and not the fat
So best aerobic exercise for obese persons is slow level walking or brisk walking – it could be one hour and even it could be divided into four portions of 15 minutes each , even at home if not outside, consuming the same number of calories as one hour of continuous walk. Because of regular walk appetite actually decreases and the obese person is less inclined to eat more. In addition the effect of walk continuous throughout the day leading to increased metabolism and hence caloric requirements go up, leading to faster weight loss.
Quite a few obese people wrongly believe that any exercise which does not cause excessive perspiration does not help in weight reduction. NO. Perspiration has nothing to do with weight loss . Fat never ever melts in the form of sweat as is thought by many weight watchers .
So it proves that exercise is not substitute for proper dieting. It helps in weight reduction as a supplement and not as an alternative.

I have read your book 'In the spirit of slim'. You have also given detailed info about the different kinds of foods that we eat here in India. That is what I found most useful because all we have in the market today are weight-loss books from the West with suggestions related to very different eating habits. That was very thoughtful. Many thanks.

To lose weight AND be fit, we need to both exercise and eat an adequate, nutrient dense diet. We need both elements present. If we are not getting enough nutrients in diet alone, and most people do not, we also must choose to take good wholefoods supplements.

As far as exercise goes, we need to incorporate all three types to get the best results: aerobic or cardio for the heart (dancing, brisk walking, jogging, sports, aerobic dance), strength training to build muscles (push ups, chinups, weights, bands), and flexibility exercises (stretching, yoga, etc). We need to incorporate all three so that we can not only lose weight, but be fit and healthy for a lifetime.

True....fat needs to be aproached through exercising aerobically while we include the elements of strength, flexibility and core training.Definitely balanced and healthy food and if necesary suplements too to be added. Most importantly make life style changes....make the awareness a 24 hour work out which means you need to sleep enough and be stress free as far as possible to avoid that pot belly or flab.

All true guys, the only other aspect I would like to emphasis is that in my experience, by the time a person gets to the obese stage (medical conditions aside), they have a psychological relationship with food that they need to overcome initially. Perhaps a whole other discussion point. Good to read all your comments. Regards to all, John

At that point, food has become an obsession. They need to be taught that eating is good since food helps us live. They need to be shown that they should not starve themselves lean, but that they need to substitute the bad foods for good foods. They need to continue to eat every 2 to 3 hours, but the foods they consume should be nutrtitious. This is the first step.

After they have come to that realization, we can set them up with a program that will help them build muscle, letting them know that muscle burns fat. We need to let them know that to build muscle we need to both exercise AND eat nutrient-dense foods.
