gazellems | | “Then what are you doing in bed with me.” I burst into tears. He was right and I knew it. I was longing to hear Fletcher pledge his undying love for me instead he proceeded to point out what I already knew. Leroy was just a means to an end for me. He was going to be my way to all the things I wanted but love had nothing to do with it. Fletcher held me while I cried but no promises were made. I longed to tell him that I really loved him but knew he didn’t feel the same way.
“Please don’t make this hard for me. I can’t see you anymore. I need more than you can give me. Things have been fun but I am going to choose Leroy. If you ever cared about me, just go and don’t come back. Okay?” Fletcher got up, dressed and left. He was going down the hall and came back. He kissed my forehead then left. I lay in bed crying.
Was I choosing the wrong man? I called Leroy and told him I chose him. We went to dinner, he was thrilled and all the while I felt miserable. My girlfriends all said I was doing the best thing. I saw Fletcher at work the next day. He looked at me then went in to Philomena’ office and quit.
By Thanksgiving, my conscious was driving me crazy. Leroy’s parents were dead and I had avoided taking Leroy to meet my parents. I hadn’t even told them about him. Leroy was coming by weekly but things never seemed better to me. Leroy’s boat had scheduled to be out for Thanksgiving so I’d avoided him having dinner with the parents.
The week after Thanksgiving, Fletcher called and asked if I could type up a paper for him. I said I didn’t think that was a good idea. I was avoiding being alone with him since just hearing his voice had made me ecstatic. He promised to behave himself and said he needed this grade to stay in the program. I relented and agreed to do it. The date was December 3rd and I remember it because it was the night I got pregnant.
