prabir ghose | | It was strange to see West Bengal partially paralyzed by yet another bandh – the call for this bandh was not given by the major political parties like the CPM or the Trinamool or the Congress but by a tiny group that calls itself the SUCI. And the bandh did not enjoy support of any of the major parties. Still they were able to achieve success which goes to show that Kolkata and West Bengal is turning out to be a heaven for those who love to avail every opportunity to sit in the house and enjoy his life. The excuse for remaining absent is assigned to the transportation problems as a result of the bandh and no one can deny it – thanks to the minute by minute coverage extended by the sincere electronic media, the deserted streets bear testimony to the truth. Rumors were heard in certain quarters that the bandh was on Thursday; therefore if one takes another day leave officially on Friday on grounds of illness, one can enjoy a full five days stretch of absence from duties since Saturday is a holiday as it is followed by a Sunday and the official holiday on Monday due to Republic day. The bandh, in their opinion, was timely and the SUCI deserves to be thanked. Who knows – the SUCI might have paved the way for defectors to move into their camp before the General Elections.

prabir ghose | | wonder why no one has filed any PIL against those who resort to such uncivilised tactics to draw attention to their selfish motives by inconveniencing the masses ... the electronic media should not extend any coverage to these atrocities perpetrated on the common man ..... the sick cannot go for treatnent, the students cannot go for attending examinations, those in search of jobs cannot reach the venue in time, those arriving at the airport or railway stations have to suffer untold miseries - all because someone somewhere felt that he (or she!) has been wronged ... what a topsy turvy state of affairs ... i wonder if things will change when mamnata comes to power...

prabir ghose | | nirad c choudhury is credited with having made the famous quote - 'A man who cannot endure dirt, dust, stench, noise, ugliness, disorder, heat, and cold has no right to live in India.'
we could modify it to 'a man who cannot endure bandhs, work stoppages, sporadic incidents of murder and destruction of public property has no right to lve in kolkata.'
