Mr.Mohan

Yes as usual Iam always here for that.

Give me the guidelines so that I can follow it.

As of now I had five others along with me who will be attending this programme.

Where can we have the venue as?

If we can have the venue as a college of school it may also be good.

A school will be good. The headmistress at Guntur Subbiah pillai school in T Nagar told me it would be good if we can get a place from her. I wonder if anyone can go talk to her and find out the rates. I will pay for the room.
We should plan a classroom full and not more than that because we just may not have the numbers. 50 is a good number to hope. wonder if we can project?

@Rani/@Mr.Mohan

Welcome back Rani

Wish you can take up the co-ordination part if are free. Or else I too can do that. Not a big issue. But Mohan, should we commit on paying for the space.

@Murali,

As usual I hope you can start to count the heads.....

@Mohan

If we can give some printout kind of thing. We can do it. IF Mr.Srini can give some material may be 2/3 pages worth preserving, we can take a printout and make Xerox of it and distribute it.

Well if its reasonable i will pay for it(as inRs 2000 for
2 hrs for a classroom). Only thing is we need to check out if the place is suitable to make a laptop projected presentation and if it has the means by which we can do.
The reason i wanted to use a state board school is that as per the headmistress this is a way of the school getting funded. I hold all my company tests out there so they can be helped.

Great Idea. Byt Mohan, is it also possible to track where the 2000.00 is going? Can this be done as a "Kind" rather than cash?

I would suggest most of our mixers should be done at local schools and the rooms should be rented.

That is the fee the school charges for such events its not a donation. So the School decides what it wants to do with it not us.

hmm...While I am not against the rental charge that is being taken by anyplace, I thought as a state govt. school, there would be limits on what they can make use of their class rooms.

In that case can we ask the NSS/NCC students/teachers of that school to attend this programme.

Kanchana Ravichandran
The big question is whether they will be willing to turn up on Sunday. Colleges would not mind coming on a Saturday cause students who devote themselves to community services get credits - an innovative scheme by the Goverment that if each student puts in some hours (if I remember right 150 hrs) for either NSS or NCC or CSS.

The NSS and NCC students do turn up on Sundays if instructed by the teachers. The taechers are also smart enough, they may use this programme to show on account this programme on their yearly count or so.

Cause I spoke from my past experience - we did tree planting in PS High School where our own Dr. Chandragupta helped us with the tree sapplings. The HM assured me that 300 students would turn up and only 4 turned up.
It was actually their project - tree sapplings for their own school - they requested me to help in this project but sadly neither students nor teachers were there. From their point of view I actually felt sorry - they work hard the whole week and are also expected to turn up on a Sunday afternoon.

Senthil Nathan
@KR

Its mandatory that when you get into a Govt organisation/Institution the words of the Head shouldnt be taken for granted. You should have taken atleast some of the other teachers into confidence...

This is from my past experience. We got 50 NSS volunteers to plan 500 saplings on road sides on a single day. This was a programme organised by one of the NGO. We just spent for the breakfast and lunch which again was a very simple one. We took the NSS officer into confidence.

Again the mentality of the people also matters here. Let us hope for the best..Get the NSS/NCC students who are in the Commerce group. Let us give a try and this students is going to be extra apart from the target of 50-80 participants from our end.

Wish to extend this invitation for your whole family because the kids - the future India are the one who should be more aware of this. So this can very well be a good weekend outing for the whole family but a useful one and a less expensive one also.

Force never works! U can take the horse only upto the water but can't make it drink it unless it decides to drink. Am sure u r thinking that I was referring to myself - actually its my family especially my kids.
U can't force it on anyone - it has to come from within. Will wait for that day if it happens well and good if not there is still the rest of the World!

Have informed an Organisation who is into Housekeeping too. In fact, they were the pillars of Exora in the 90s and the pioneers for taking the Zero Waste Management to North Madras.
Maybe, if atleast 2 of them are given slots to speak - share their experiences - the challenges and how to overcome it, how they went about getting volunteers etc, they can also bring a bigger crowd. Just a suggestion.

Let me try to reproduce his ideas(i may not be very good at it but let me see).
1. India has 3 things in plenty garbage, sunshine and people
2. The idea is to effectively use these 3 things to create a profitable zero waste management system

He recruits peoples like destitutes etc and gives them jobs so his work always generates employment for people
The work of his people begins with segregation of garbage this is done taking the best hygine practices and everyone is given gloves etc
the garbage is segregated into
Organic
Inorganic
further Inorganic waste is further subdivided based on where the work is being done(eg hospital, school, bus stand etc)
Cattle going for slaughter is saved(bought)
Inorganic waste is fed to cattle for processing(what takes 21 days to decompose is now processed in a few hours)
the bi products are used for gas, compost etc
I wont go into more detail than this but his presentation does. Its best to keep the suspence but its fascinating.
If you have kids please bring them coz its a great experiment in bio engineering indian style.

When you said Lavanya is almost right, I imagined myself as the half teeth missing old lady in that Paint Company ad where the grandfather tells about teaching his grandson cycling and she finally ends up with 'I am always right'

Now you make me scratch my head..

70 people is fine. I am expecting only 50 if at all. That is an optimal number for people to communicate and learn. If we have more than that at the door we handle it there.
Even with Jayanti i dont expect more than 50.

About the speaker:

Vellore, a historical famous place, should have been an idyllic place in the past. Now its heat is notorious, thanks to the large scale deforestation and the river Palar running dry.

Thiru Srinivasan is determined to change the situation and has been working tirelessly from hi student days.

Impoverished villagers, who lived near the hills, cut down trees for firewood, set fire to the forest to clear areas for their cattle to graze in, and brewed illicit liquor. Srinivasan realized that in order to bring back greenery to the hills and recharge the ground water, he had to find gainful employment for these villagers and have them actively participate in protecting the hills.

So he established the Vellore Hills Restoration Project and formed Exnora Green Cross (EGC) in 1995, as an affiliate of Exnora International, with a vision to “bring about socio-economic change through employment generation based on environmental conservation by enlisting people's participation”.

Within a decade of his initiating the activities, we can see the fruit of his work. Working closely with the local village panchayat and the Forest Deaprtment, Exnora Green Cross started its work in the hills with a plan to de-silt the pre-existing ponds on the hills, dig new ponds, build check dams which will arrest the water run-off from the hillsides, plant seedlings and eventually create a healthy forest that is protected and valued by the people living near it. Any visitor can see enthusiastic stakeholders in action.

Thiru Srinivasan has also identified anther problem every city faces, namely, urban waste disposal. He, then, started the Community Composting Project with the support of UNICEF where waste from five neighbourhoods was recycled and successfully processed. His aim is to reach Zero Waste.

Impressed with his work, a number of local bodies have adapted his model for waste management, and is acclaimed as the ‘National Model’. For more information on him and his work, please visit: http://publications.aidindia.org/content/view/256/87/

I feel Vellore srinivasan effort on zero waste management and the consequent adoption of the same as National Model requires our support to create awareness among the urban population.Further seggregation of waste at source point is a initiative that has not caught on.It is also important to handle carefully the waste for recycling, etc,.

Perhaps Vellore srinivasan will create the necessary impetus to environmental movements related to waste .As it will result in generation of employment & useful income to make it self supporting.Sriinvasan has been doing very useful job of giving employment to Physically challenged people to manage the infrastucture facilities in Bus Terminus like cycle stands ,paid toilets ,etc, etc,it should be seen to believe their salutary effect on those people.

Mohan you can add more to this.

It was a pleasant evening in Chennai on March the 15th 2009. We started the programme a bit late hoping that some more guests will join us. And so started the programme at 4.30P.M. Mr.Mohan gave an introduction. And Mr.Srinivasan took over the stage.

Initially Mr.Srinivasan started the seminar in Tamil and because of Mr.Mohan's request he switched over to English. Mr.Mohan easoned that he want to circulate the recorded version among non-tamil speaking crowd also.

He gave an overview about Vellore. He gave a powerpoint presentation on the hillock around Vellore and how the habitats in those hillock were destroyed by the local populations and he explained how his organisation is restoring the lost habitats on the hillocks. He even explained the forts and tourist attraction in the forest region around vellore. All this was done by involving the local public and also has arranged job opportunities within the scope of these activities. He is also expecting funds to support these activities to sustain whatever has been achieved in these area in all these years. They have divided the region/hillocks into some 7 groups. And for each group to run the project they need 21,000INR per month and their initial period of the project is for 2 years. They are looking for groups/corporates/individuals to take up a particular group/region thus funding 21K per month. Environment activists/corporates interested in it can contact Mohan or Vellore Srinivasan for this.

Second part is Zero Waste Management seminar. He had a detailed motion presentation which is self explanatory. Starting from collection of waste from homes, segregating, feeding it to cows, decomposing, generating energy, vermicompost, waste water treatment using ducks and everything involved in it. He also threw some light on the administration part of it and also how it gives jobs to people from that region and how Self-help groups are involved in this. A real treat to hear from him and made me to dream of really a environment and society which dont have any kind of garbage. Hope it will come to reality soon. Srinivasan also gave an outlook on the model what he has worked on and explained the theoretical part of it.

He even mentioned that the natives who had lost their income because of his forest restoration programmes are made to earn their income by working for the Zero waste management project.

Srinivasan also gave an information on a really innovative project on Cultivating on the open terrace of an apartment in Chennai. This he is implementing on a test basis in an Apartment in Chennai where they are going to cultivate/grow vegetables, greens on the open terrace. This will be open for public viewing from April 11th 2009. To view it anyone can contact Mr.Srinivasan.

Srinivasan also said some other state Govternments like Tirupura, Karnataka has started to implement this Vellore model in their states in some districts.

With this and some other discussion we concluded this session.

By the way Mr.Nagarajan said he is taking up some similar project in Chennai

There was some discussion on Solar energy also.

Was really informative though it was a disappointment that we had a very small crowd.

For further details or to contact and to know more about Vellore Srinivasan you can check the website
http://zerowastemanagement.org

Mr.Mohan has recorded the whole programme with the help of his friend and he will be happy to share the video with anyone on request.

SF,

Excellent!

Thanks for the write up which described exactly what happened in brief to all ryzeans!.

It is a real pity that people missed a golden opportunity to understand the axiomatic living with environment.
Veelore Srinivasan efforts in environmental restoration project and zero waste management project sholud be seen to be believed.

We can organise a visit to Veelore Srinivasans project on Zero waste management at Bagayam ,Veelore if some corporate sponsors or individuals pitch in with help.

Further I really marvelled at the reserach Vellore Sriinvasan has done to unearth the facts about local fort, palace about the royalty especially the local king Sunny Jagirdhar.Man! this takes hell of lot of work and i was spell bound listening to Veelore Srinivasan narrate this.

I would like to have a repeat of this lecture by Vellore Srinivasan and this time let people attend the same in better numbers and please pitch in with sponsorship if you can!

Let me discuss this With Mohan G first !

Mr. Padhu

Well said.

It was really a honour to be there yesterday.

Yes, Mr.Mohan also will be happy to arrange one more for a wider audience. But I myself is bit embarrassed since I had let him down in getting the count I promised yesterday.

I have to talk to certain people who will really gain on these projects(Zero waste management) and then will get back to Mr.Mohan with some concrete plan.

And Vellore details and about his green restoration project in the hillock of Vellore - I have no words to explain or appreciate the efforts. Its an effort of a life time purely done for the passion of environment restoration for our future generations......

Dear Ryzers,

We need to really thank Mr Mohan who took the efforts to arrange such a wonderful program which is useful for everyone.

We are looking forward to another demo of a Roof Top Garden @ Kottivakkam next month where the residents get around 20 + varieties of garden fresh without any pesticides.

I urge other ryzers to participate in such sort of programs and give a hand to Mr Vellore Srinivasan in his venture.

Regards
Paddy

Hi Mohanji,
When you plan to post at youtube you have to divide the video into parts due ti time restriction (normal allowable time for each movie is 10 minutes. i have my own site http://www.elearninglive.tv
where there is no time restriction. when you release your movie to youtube you can think of using my facility.

You know what is fascinating, its the 7th or 8th time i have heard vellore srinivasan talk. Each time there is one more thing that ties me to the chair. I have never seen anyone so passionate so full of energy and so full of ideas. He changes you in a way that no one ever will. He does not do it for prizes and he does not do it for money. He does it for the love of what he is doing. This is why i had requested you come with your kids you may not care much for it but it will change your kids lives.
One such incident changed my life, i was 12 yrs old and an uncle of mine took me to listen to Jiddu Krishnamurthy. Till now i have not recovered from that meeting such was the impact. Such was the loss too when he died(i lived 10 kms from where he was in Ojai in the city of Santa barbara) the year he died.

Mohan,

I feel the next Vellore lecture we shall invite people who are genuinely interested and they will have to contribute towards making the arrangements.

I feel days of free lunch is long over and we need to see some value additon for efforts taken & the benefits should reach all serious minded people!

I hope ryzeans who know the efforts taken to arrange these lectures would appreciate the initiative!!

I invite you to give your views.

It makes a GR8 impact even while Reading your post Mohan.
People who are serious / committed to take this forwrd should be the ones to attend.

And yes free lunch may bring in crowd, there ends the matter. The same crowd disappears. So organizers feel let down as no one really contributes in kind or form or work....
