John Stephen Veitch | | This is a problematic quote Richard. We are always wiser "later" often many years later, and there is no way to solve that problem.
TODAY exists, and you only know and understand what you know and understand today. You can't be someone else, nor can you take decisions with tomorrow's knowledge.
What you can do is try an operate with the best understanding and knowledge available today. Sadly, we often fail to do that even when we are trying very hard to "get the decision right".
The information you need to make the best decision is almost always available, and very often we are aware of it in some vague way, but we reject it. Understanding why we reject the best information is a bit of a puzzle, because we tell ourselves that we are rational and sensible people.
The best out in the open and very public exhibition of how people make this mistake is the way the Republicans and Democrats got themselves into the war in Iraq.
FIRST: They shared an objective, to keep Iraq from becoming powerful in the Middle East, and to see Saddam Hussein removed from power.
That's the key to the problem. With the objective firmly in mind, they CHOSE what they considered to be reliable information by cherry picking the available data and calling "TRUE" anything that supported their objective. Now with hindsight we can see what a disaster that was. Both sides osculating the call for war based on entirely wrong "facts".
But don't laugh, because ALL of us can do exactly that. Your protection is to avoid 100% commitment to your objectives. You need to be able to see into your own actions with an outsider's view. Sadly I don't think that's possible. BUT, we do have friends and enemies, and they are people who can tell us the truth about ourselves if we care to listen.

I can not help being continually surprised and fasinated by the condition known in my line as design coincidence.
For example: In your picture standing with your hands behind your back in front of a brick pillar, a first quick look always gets me to look again to see if you are really being hanged by the neck with a large yellow rope.
I always wonder if you did it on purpose.
Did you do it on purpose Richard?
Have a good IDea today,
