I spent a few hours this morning at a workshop designed to help determine the direction of my county for the next 30 years. The workshop was called, "Lake County 2030: A Blueprint for Our Future." While I was not really disappointment in the process the organizers used to gathering feedback from the audience attending the event, I was extemely disappointed in the turnout of the audience. Only about 20 people turned out. This is a grant-funded project. People are being paid good money to conduct these workshops. And, only 20 people bother to show up!
Sometimes I have to wonder if there is simply a great deal of apathy where I live or is this a universal condition of the world at the moment?
A few weeks ago, I wrote an article for my local gated community's magazine about the upcoming grant-writing seminar being held here that is going to benefit the entire county. Guess what? I learned a few days ago that they refuse to print it. Why? Because I am not on the Board of Directors of this community; nor am I a department head of the local association which runs the community. No, I am just both an employee of the association and a resident. What's really odd about this is that I may end up having the endorsement of the Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger's office before this seminar takes place on April 15th. The association that refused to print my story is going to look stupid - knowing that something extremely important is happening right in their backyard and refusing to print it.
