Yes Ron it's a laugh.

But what's the underlying idea?

1. That government can't deliver efficient services?

2. That US Auto Manufacturers are so unstable they can't be relied on to meet the obligations of the warranty?

By the title you gave this, I assume the point is the first.

I have to say that's a mindless prejudice. Government departments can be very effective and efficient if they are allowed to be. The problem with them is usually they are designed to be inefficient and malfunctioning. The political masters get what they want in the end.

The same applies to private enterprise. The managers get what they want in the end. That isn't always a desirable result if you take the consumer point of view.

The best example I can offer you is USA's health care.
It's roughly TWICE the cost of the medical centre offered in the UK, Canada or New Zealand. The last time I saw a ranking for the quality of health care in the USA, 48th isn't something to be proud of.

I've just been listening to President Obama talking about the differences between Europe and the USA, remarking that Europe has achieved some things the USA needs to think about seriously. He mentioned both Health Care and Social Welfare, but also high speed train networks.

Europe has these facilities in country after country, because Europeans understand that governments do have an important role to play, in providing services to the economy.

If you want to argue the private industry is always better, you've got a difficult case to make.
