Did you know that every 5 pounds of extra weight your knees feel 10 times that wiehgt? That means if you are 5 pounds overweight, your knees feel 50 times the pressure!! Now imagine is you are 10 pounds overweight... that is 100 pounds of extra pressure. Oh, man, no wonder so many people are constantly going in for knee surgery!!

So, what can you do to help your knees? Well, exercising is a great way to help them because it strengthens them. The more muscle you have surrounding them, the better protected they are. Make sure you do strength AND flexibility exercises to make them strong and to keep the weight off of you, or lose those extra pounds if you are already overweight.

Take care of your knees - surgery is sure no fun!!

Please suggest some good exercises for the knees and hips. Yoga helps but a small dose of daily exercise would reduce the aches and pains experienced after a tiring day.

Calf and thigh exercises, with heavy weights (for women 15-25 pounds, men can go up to 50) will really help strengthen the muscles around your knees. Some examples are calf raises, lunges and sumo squats.

Something functional for variety.....Walk up the stairs and come down the lift...do your calf raises, fore foot raises and balancing on one leg in the lift(the moving lift can be an added challenge). While climbing up the stairs, see that you place your full foot on the step, the common mistake is to step up on your forefoot which puts undue pressure on your knees.Make a variation by climbing side ways, initiate with right for a fleet and left for the next.Try not to hold on to the hand railings while walking and maintain a good allignment\posture by slightly tucking in your abdomen. You can do these either at home or at work. Can be done staggered through the day too.....Wishing you 'Happy Knees'...Vijaya

Great functional exercises, Vijaya. Thanks for posting them.

Like she said - always maintain proper alignment and keep a good posture, which means abs tight, back straight and shoulder blades back; good posture is extremely important during every exercise session.
