Christensen explains something that is very true of myself and or many people who live in New Zealand. Certainly 50 years and more ago, lots of things we needed were not available to us, either because they were too expensive of because, with import regulation it was impossible to get them in New Zealand.
So there was a myth born, that NZ'ers were very creative. Any New Zealander can fix anything! All he needs is a piece of No8 wire. (On NZ farms No8 fencing wire was readily available, and was used for a 100 things besides fencing.)
My father was always taking things apart and "fixing them" and much to my wife's distress I still do.
