"The soul attracts that which it secretly harbors, that
which it loves, and also that which it fears. It reaches
the height of its cherished aspirations. It falls to the
level of its unchastened desires - and circumstances
are the means by which the soul receives its own."

Hmmmm.
A bit vague and open-ended. I'm not quite sure what this motivates me to do. Go out and look for circumstances that enables my soul to receive itself?

The first two sentences of an editorial in Gilbert magazine, volume 12, Number 6, April/May 2009 entitled PACIFISM are:
“Life is profoundly good, and being alive is a profoundly good thing. If one accepts this proposition, It becomes obvious that the defense of life against unjust aggressors is also a profoundly good thing, whether the aggressors are hunger, disease, floods or brigands.”
The first two sentences of the second paragraph are:
“The alternative proposition, that being alive is not good, produces different conclusions with respect to defending human life. If human life is not good, then there is no cogent or objective argument for defending it.”
The editorial is just eight paragraphs.

Thomas Holford | | Two bland and innocuous propositions totally dependent on the highly contentious definitions of three words:
A. "life" B. "unjust" C. "brigands"

Thomas Holford writes - "Two bland and innocuous propositions totally dependent on the highly contentious definitions of three words:
A. "life" B. "unjust" C. "brigands"
T. G. Holford"
I get the impression, from the above response, that he actually agrees with the two bland and innocuous propositions, knows the definitions of the three words, but, wishes they weren't actually true.
There is a lot of that going on these days.

Thomas Holford | | Since you seem to be professing that you know the true definitions of arguably contentious words, please provide us with the true definitions of:
A. life
B. unjust
C. brigands
For extra credit, you might want to take a stab at providing the true definition of:
C. marriage

News must travel slowly out where you are.
Are you aware that in California it took two ballot initiatives, multiple court cases, a state constitutional amendment, and appeals to the California Supreme Court to define the term "marriage"?
And there are STILL interest groups and politicians who do NOT accept the definition of "marriage" endorsed by the majority of Californians.
Communication relies on a COMMONLY SHARED vocabulary. Much political divisiveness arises from cynical, manipulative demagogues attempting to insinuate special meanings into commonly understood vocabulary, turning words into distortions.
