Thanks to Lindy Asimus, I became acquainted with Ning.com. I must say those Ning networks are amazing. A friend of mine actually tried to set up a Ning network she created with a community radio station. The idea was that the radio station could deal with both regular callers and online folks at the same time. I confess to not really understanding how she would have made that work. However, community radio stations have FCC rules which make this difficult to do, anyway. So, the radio station ended up undoing the woman's effort.

Nevertheless, I have a town hall currently using the resources of a Ning network. We can, for a small fee, have all the Google ads removed, and replace those ads with local business ads. But, check this out. Each individual member of the network can have their own "live" video stream via ustream.tv. I currently have a slide-show running showcasing a local restaurant on my personal Ning page. But, it is actually possible for me to have a "live" broadcast. Now, I have not done this. So, I am not sure what all to expect. Are people going to just see and hear me talk? Or, is there a means for them to text chat and speak as well? Is there a way for me to record the this without using special tools like Camtasia or Jing? If you are familiar with ustream.tv, please share the many ways you can put it to use.

Lamar,
You have so many friends who are using Ning and you are a member, so wouldn't it be more appropriate to seek the answers to your questions in that forum?

When I am a member of Red Cross, I don't seek answers to the way they operate from Amnesty International. You may, but I wouldn't lest I be considered a ning-nong.

Lamar Murray is correct. In fact there is a Ning network for network owners - go to the Help section under your management tab and it will take you right there.

Cheers

Murray,

The people for whom I created the Ning network know less about using the platform than I do. That is partly why I created it for them. This is an IT Ryze Network. Many of the folks here know more about technology than I do. That is why I come here seeking the advice. This is not a Red Cross/Amnesty International pairing. There are actually folks on this network who know a lot about Internet technology. In fact, the moderator of this site, Reg Charie, is himself a web designer. If I were to pick out just one network on all of Ryze to ask a question about Ning.com, this would be THE NETWORK I would choose.

Yes and we get paid for our expertise. Try and Google for the answers. Then ask us what we think.

Lamar,
All software applications are implementations of a system design and or concept. Asking a system implementation question here is like asking an English grammar expert to give a critique of a novel without reading it. So go to the area where there are experts in your particular sytem. Someone suggested you go to the network group on nong. Scott suggest that you go to google, search find an answer and then MAYBE ask for an opinion here.

Or if you want us to research your project to give you an answer that you will possibly still not understand, make it a project, back it with budget so that it is worth our while to spend to or three hours to do the research and a couple of hours to write a report that your IT expert can understand.

If you don't have an IT expert then you need to put one on a retainer or start working within your level of expertise. Scott can point you to plenty of IT professionals who will be more than willing to take on your paid work. Alternatively, go to rentacoder.com or getafreelancer or elance and you will find an abundance of people who are able to help you and can guarantee a solution.

There is a lot to be said for paying someone to get going on a project.

Case in point, a colleague has just gone through a useful but painful learning experience with rapidweaver. (Not her choice, but what she was instructed to use). Long story short, she has done the site twice in different format, and had some paid help from a non-rapidweaver computer guy. The upshot.. she has learned a lot and now has a rapidweaver expert going to redo her site and for very little money in real terms, to do it properly.

She will never get that time back though.

Murray,

I appreciate your advice. Thanks so much. However, for the record, here is what this network, Telling IT Straight, says about itself - "Support for hardware, software, website building and code, PHP/MySQL, networking, marketing and SEO." It would seem to me that my Ning comments are appropriate for this site. Of course, that's just one man's opinion - mine.

Folks:     I don't mind telling Lamar where he can find the answers he's seeking because he so freely shares his discoveries and contacts with us from which I get paid, later.

I've known him for a couple of years and have discovered that ideas he brought us and was toying with a year ago are now main stream and discover they're now profitably deployed.

In answer to your question about whether you can broadcast and chat at the same time;     The short answer is "Yes"!  We do that in Towncrier's Chat Room

Regarding the radio station, Lamar;   Unless the principals and all the participants, have bought in to the project, you may as well stay home.

Regarding Ustream: .... I liked even more it when I discovered one user claiming 3.4 Million listeners to his on-line radio station.

On the distaff side: .... Ustream crashes my machine in both IE & FF.

Bestest.

It says SUPPORT, not telling you how to implement it. If for example you found a system tp do live streaming and it was not working, you could post the error message and get some help or guidance.

You want to find other ways to accomplish your goal. The answer is the same as I have given you before. To get 100% of waht you want, you must have 100% control.
What you are asking for is solutions, not support.

I assume you get something out of helping the restaurant out, hopefully cash or at least free food. You shoudl try the same forumala and apply it to other business concerns.

Scott,

You know as well as anyone else, that people call "support lines" to get answers to questions they have. This network is no different. How do you do this? How do you do that? People ask questions. Other people provide answers. This is networking. Isn't this what Ryze is for? As many people have pointed out - over-and-over-again - the whole idea here should be focused upon building relationships. Well, trust me, answering questions people should help build those relationships.

Yes, I can go to Ning.com and ask questions in their tech support area. I can also do a Google search. But, there is also value to be had by coming here and asking the same questions and possibly getting a different perspective. For example, I would not have known Teddy Towncrier's experience had I simply inquired of Ning.com's tech support.

It is very apparent that some folks do not appreciate every question asked on this network. So what? You cannot please all the people all the time. Just ignore the questions you do not like. They will be pushed down the page and eventually disappear. For you, that's "problem solved." And, so far as I know, the Nings do not have flying machines. But, feel free to ask their tech support folks. If you don't know how to get in touch with them, ask Lindy Asimus. Lindy is the Ryzer who first acquainted me with the Ning.com world.

And are those support lines free? Do you not have to at least buy a product?
Perhaps we want you to make the effort, otherwise we have to search. Unless I have previously done it on ning I would not know. And if I did, taht is how I make money. Woudl you expect a doctor to tell you what your health is for free?
If teh Ning is so great, ask them. They are more aquainted with it, or is your purpose to attract attention to your network in a sly manor?

Lamar,
Since you want to get like that, You asked a question and we gave you support by referring YOU to places where you can find complete answers to your question.

1 The Netowrk group of nings.
2 A project at rentacoder etc
3 Retain Scott to fuly research your projject
4 And etc.

And you you have the audacity to say that you do not get support!!!

What you did not get was the solution you desired.

You had plenty of answers and it appears that you have chosen to ignore them. You have been told use Google and do Primary Research and then come and ask questions for clarification; but do you do that? To me, it does not appear to be the case. I too suspect that you have a secret agenda. After-all isn't PR a form of closeted sales promotion or self promotion?

Lamar, what else is there to say on this topic? (That was a rhetorical question.)

Murray,

If you go back to the initial post, you will see this was simply a discussion about Ning.com and one of the applications you can use with it - Ustream.tv. This is just a discussion. This is not a crisis situation. I happen to know there are folks on this network who use Ning.com, so it seemed like a good place to start the discussion.

If you do not know anything about Ning.com or Ustream.tv, you can learn from those who do - provided they take time to respond to this thread. That's the benefit this thread can have for you. But, to tell me to simply go elsewhere to ask my questions and get answers deprives those members of this network who might appreciate knowing the answers from having them provided right here.

Let's not throw the baby out with the bathwater. This is a business network. It's a place to connect with business people. It's a place where one business person can - if he chooses - provide answers for someone else who has questions. Please, just let it happen.

Lamar, I think the folks are right, you are asking in the wrong place.
The questions in your first post should be asked in the Ning forums.

True we are networking and trying to solve problems, but we are not here to present you with solutions requiring research outside of our knowledge base.
If your initial question was not answered to your satisfaction, then asking it again is not going to help.

Lamar you seem to have your undies in a bunch for some reason, assuming that the responses have something to do with whether you should ask this question here or not.

The responses have nothing to do with liking your question but everything to do with you getting information that can help you find an answer.

The conditions that prevail on the Ning platform is particular to the Ning platform, and the people who can answer your question are most likely to be on the Ning platform, becasue they have the experience that those NOT on the Ning platform have not.

We can love your question, but if you want an answer, your best bet is to go somewhere where there are people with experience in that particular environment.

Feel free to keep asking things here that nobody can answer, but the responses you've had have been an attempt to assist you to resolve your problem.

If you don't wish to find a solution, then this is a perfectly good forum to ask this question.
