Thanks to another thread on this network, I have become aware of companies redesigning themselves - out of one industry or market and into another. I never really gave this much thought until some Ryzers brought it to my attention.
For example, when I was a kid you did not say, "Go make me some copies of this." Instead, you simply said, "Go Xerox it." Why? Because only a Xerox machine made copies. Well, when was the last time you made copies using a Xerox machine? Ryzer Scott Wolpow has told me Xerox is no longer in the copier business. Instead, they are in the "document management" business. Well, when did this happen? Anybody know? Scott says our own government forced Xerox to give up their patent rights. Why would our own government do such a thing? Was this done to prevent Xerox from having a monopoly on the copier business?
I also see that IBM is no longer the major PC manufacturer it once was. Are they out of that industry for the same reason Xerox is no longer in the copier business? Is this the handiword of our own government once again? Has our own government decided it is somewho in its best interest to make sure any patented technology that becomes extremely popular is no longer patentable? What's going on here? Anybody know?
