I've been mostly silent on this site, simply read the posts, and have generally left it at that except for one or two enthusiastic discussions about the existence of the paranormal sometime last year, started by Renuka. Vaijayanti's post about the kind of Marathi books people read, and the general responses to it, have prompted me to post this message. I'm a professional translator from Marathi into english and have done dozens of translations of old and contemporary marathi books. Marathi literature is exceedingly rich and diverse and it's a shame that it doesn't reach as many people as it deserves to. Are there any particular books that any of you might like to see in English, so that they reach your english-reading children, your friends, your non-maharashtrian partners, or, simply because you feel that the book is too good to be read only by a few thousand, it must reach the rest of the world and get translated into many foreign languages too? I'm always on a lookout for classy and different books that need to reach a wider readership, where non-Maharashtrians understand the kind of literary affluence that Maharashtra enjoys, are attracted to the words, the milieu and the ethos through powerful writings of some of our biggest writers. Wud people like to list out their choices of works they wished were in english too? Or writers, who write essentially in marathi but are keen on reaching their works to mainstream english publishers?

Maddy | | I have always thought about this whenever I have read any good Marathi book. Though every language has it's own strength, and somethings that really hit you in Marathi words, may not be that effective when translated....for example...जी मजा "झणझणीत माश्याचं तिखलं" मध्ये आहे ती "spicy fish masala" मध्ये कशी येणार?
Still, some books need to be translated so that other non-Marathis can also enjoy them.
Topping this list, in my opinion, should be Pu La. Though, as I said, it is a huge and daunting task. I mean, Antu Barva cannot be effective in English....isn't it?
Second is Ratnakar Matkari's mystery stories. Now, this is something that is much more easier to translate than Pula.

Ravindra Jadhav | | I agree with Maddy's suggesstion. and would like Go. Ni. Dandekar's books on Forts in Maharashtra. There is one book published recently written By Dr. Inamdar " Hi Shreechi Ichha" a success story of Dr Inamdar in USA.

Savita Govilkar | | I think 'Iskilar' a short story ( I dont think the name of the book is Iskilar-book is probably Pingalavel) by G A Kulkarni will be appreciated quite a lot world wide. This book may take him into the league of D H Lawrence etc. I have tremendous respect for this author and most of his books have been much above the world standard. Private Reply to Savita Govilkar |

Gayatri Pagdi | | you're so right, savita! I've already submitted a porposal to a literary body to be able to introduce G A Kulkarni to non-Marathi readers. There are very few authors that can match him in his genre. He's world class. What a shame that no one outside knows him or has heard of him! Not knowing G A Kulkarni's work is a reader's loss...

I re-read it couple of times- interesting and candid account of a very interesting life- full of struggles, griefs and achievements. He has established a sizable business in Analytical Laboratories in US.
I met Dr.Thanedar, in some business matters, in his last Mumbai visit.He is very interesting personality with love for all things Marathi.Private Reply to Satish Karekar |

I'm wrapping up some previous book assignments and wasn't around here much and others, i guess, will respond to it as and when the thought comes back to them, as in every other post. i like it here, like this, it's relaxed and one can simply take off from where one left, no matter the time frame. thanks savita, for ur responses as also others who took the time to read and respond.
