Is There A Software Operating System War Brewing?Views: 412

I just learned that Oracle is seeking permission from the Justice Department to buy Sun Microsystems. Correct me if I am wrong, but I believe Sun Microsystems is the company that has been instrumental in the growth of the open source community. In other words, Sun Microsystems was anything but a fan of Microsoft. But, Oracle? I never even paid any attention to them. And now, all of a sudden, Sun Microsystems is going to belong to Oracle. What does this mean, if anything, for the growth of the Open Source community? Is Microsoft's operating system monopoly finally being seriously challenged?

Oracle is the leading devloper of Databases for the Enterprise Level.
You are a bit late, the Justice Department has already cleared it. It is a good move despite the fact it will limit some competition. Sun makes most money from hardware and most servers running Oracle do so on Sun machines with Solaris [their unix version - not linux].
Oracle is dedicated to open Source and is a sponsor of Joomladaynyc.com. They also have contributed more to Java than Sun.
Microsoft's monpoly is indeed being challenged by Linux for the desktop, Open Office for the applications suite and others. In fact I deciding if my next artcile should be about Linux for business desktops or Open Source applications..
