Lamar Morgan 954-603-7901 | | My brother got rid of his PC and got an iMac because he was tired of all the viruses he was getting. I understand he can run both Mac and PC software on his iMac. Well, I wonder if that is because the iMac has both OSes installed on the system? I have asked my brother about this, but have yet to get a response.
I recall Reg saying it is hard to get "under the hood" of an Apple computer, whereas it is rather easy with a PC. Does that mean everything in an Apple computer is proprietary? If something goes bad in an iMac only an Apple product can fix it? Is there by any chance both Windows hardware and Apple hardware in an iMac? What is it about an Apple computer that makes it so much more expensive than a PC? Is it just hype or is there really something more to it?
I am asking for personal user opinions. This is not something a Google search or a Wikipedia search is going to satisfy.

Scott Wolpow | | Did oyu not ask this same question well over 1 year ago? The answer which is searchable has not changed. You can install all OS's on all machines. Most hardware is cross compatable, but may not have the same timing. Until last year all Apple was their own design. Now they share the Intel platform. In some cases you will need an Apple product. Search for Apple and proprietary or apple replacement partsPrivate Reply to Scott Wolpow |

My brother owns an iMac and he just sent me an email stating you cannot run PC software on an iMac without special software ($250 purchase). I was under the impression you could run PC software on an iMac right out of the box. In fact, I thought you could run both PC and Mac software at the same time with a split screen. You see, the reason I thought a Mac was so much more expensive than a PC was because it was really two computers in one box. I guess I was mistaken, big-time. You see, I thought the reason those Apple commercials with the Mac and PC guy in front of that white screen were so successful was because two operating systems were being sold in one box. I thought both Microsoft and Apple were successfully promoting themselves through one commercial. Otherwise, it makes little sense to me why Microsoft would allow itself to be so lampooned by Apple in those commercials. It just seemed to me that there must be something that Microsoft is benefiting from by allowing those Apple commercials to run and ridicule them.

Scott Wolpow | | Split screen? Not exactly. You have two options. One to load both OS's on the machine and have choice on boot. I am not sure how well this works on a Mac, I have seen it on a PC, but taht person hacked the OS code.
You do not have to buy any software. http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=mac/10.5/en/11889.html
This is the second choice. Running a virtual machine. An icon would fire up a window where Widows would operate. I do not think you could drag and drop accross teh two. Here are more links.

Microsft can not do anything about the comercials as long as what is said is factual.Private Reply to Scott Wolpow |

My brother finally sent me this link - Find Out How. It is a series of videos about using an iMac. Apparently, there are different ways to take advantage of Windows on a Mac. It all depends upon your need. This really helps explain why those seemingly silly Apple TV commercials are so clever. Apple and Microsoft are not really competitors. They are simply different sides of the same coin. I wonder when that happened? Did it happen before or during the Justice Department's investigation of Microsoft as a monopoly? Correct me if I am mistaken, but I do believe the Justice Department did find Microsoft guilty of being a monopoly and did fine them. But, the fine was not substantial compared to Microsoft's massive wealth.
