Scratch-N-Sniff Flexible DVDViews: 602

If you received a DVD mailer that smelled like either roses or coffee, would you be more inclined to open the mailer and play the DVD? Or, would you be more inclined to throw it away without even playing to DVD and seeing what was on it? Would it impress you at all that the DVD was so flexible you could wrap it around a soda can and not harm it?

There is a company which markets just such a product. Here's a video that talks about - Flex Impact Movie.

Has anyone seen anything more innovative than this in the world of DVD's? If so, please tell us about it on this thread.

Lamar:   Aromas do impact us!

When the mailer is exciting enough ..... It will get opened and the aromas will have an opportunity to do their intended job of motivating the recipient.

Not sure where .... but there is a place for this product and maybe some of the other bright sparks on here may have an idea or two.     Scott's secret jewelry line could be a good fit.

The uniqueness of the product in your post makes the post a good candidate for a Tweet This Link

Hi Lamar,

I don't think scent would make me more inclined to watch a DVD ... I'm going to allow a promotional video to take my time because I am interested in the subject, not because of a scent.

As for flexible, again it wouldn't make me more interested in watching the content. I may play with the physical DVD or play a game of frisbee in the house until the novelty wears off, but again it would probably have a minimal impact on increasing the number of people actually watching it ... so make sure the artwork on the DVD is impressive!

My interest would be for providing an instructional DVD for my wood furniture restoration product ... easier to mail if I can wrap it around a bottle instead of trying to fit a jewel case into the package. But I wouldn't want any scent associated with the DVD ... these days, you need to be careful with scents. So many people have sensitivities, especially if they are chemically-derived imitations.

It's an interesting product, but hardly something that will revolutionize direct marketing ...

Russ,

Did you watch the video clip associated with the product in my initial post? If not, go back and take a look. I did not know DVD's were toxic if broken. According to the video clip, if a DVD breaks, toxic chemicals can seep into the ground. I never knew this before. If that is indeed true, then I think it is wise to go with the flexible DVD.

There are some companies that sell Adult material that may want to use it. I will pass along your contact info Lamar, perhaps you can help them.

I tried a couple of times to watch the video, but ran out of time before it managed to load (server wasn't able to handle the visitor load perhaps?). Time is an issue for a lot of people these days, and whether online or off I'm only prepared to spend so much time to watch an advertisement for something that does not fill an immediate need for me.

When the time comes and I'm researching how best to include instructional video with my product, then I would be interested in going out of my way to get more information on all available options.

LOL ... I'm not sure people want their furniture to smell. In fact, my product can be used to remove odors from wood furniture. Maybe if these scented DVD's catch on and people's coffee tables smell like coffee or roses when the DVD's are left to sit, I can sell a lot more Wood Elixir!

Guys,

I really do appreciate the humor, but let's be honest here. Don't you think the idea of a flexible, non-toxic and scented DVD is a good idea? Think about it. The product is made to appeal to your senses BEFORE you even use it. Now, is that not clever? You get a package. You are not sure what's inside. All you know is that it smells nice. When you open up the package, what do you discover? You discover you have a DVD that not only smells nice, but is both flexible and sturdy. Chances are good it will not be easily broken.

Why would anyone consider this an insignificant innovation or problematic - outside of those who might be allergic to certain fragrances?

Seriously, a flexible DVD would be of interest as long as it wasn't scented, and if the cost was justifiable.

There would also be come consumer education involved, to convince people that the DVD wouldn't jam in or otherwise harm their player. With the centrifugal forces there's no way it should (as long as the disc's integrity isn't compromised), but there may be a percentage of people who will be resistant to something new.

But as with anything, it comes down to return on investment. I don't think you would increase your response rates significantly, which means the cost increase over standard DVDs would have to be (somewhat) negligible.

Scented adverts do not really work well. In magazines tehy give me headaches as they are overwhelming.
BTW I do have experiance in adding the scents, having used them in epoxy decrotive applications. They were a nice, but I do not think a person viewing a product would sniff the DVD before putting it in. Also can you prove the DVD is inert? Or if DVD's are toxic in general? I can not fond any facts to support either claim.

I would worry about the integrity of the DVD when it is in the drive and spinning, esp after it has been rolled up or folded.

Have you ever had a CD or DVD explode?
They make a lot of noise and mess.

If I were going to go for an unusual CD I would opt for a business card sized one.

I hate them biz card CDs, they sound like a wood router in the drive.
Wouldn't trust a flex one either, opto drives cost way more than a throw away CD. So why take a chance?
