I have a friend who wants to start a membership website and was wondering which platform is better?

Wordpress or Joomla?

I know a lot about membership with wordpress but am not familiar with Joomla so which one would you choose?

Thanks :)

That is what Joomla was designed for. In factthe word means community.

Thanks Scott, but can Joomla be used for paid memberships? I know I have looked at templates etc and see how they look etc. Wasn't sure about them being used for paid memberships.

I can't divulge what the site will be for but it will all be run with monthly or yearly subscriptions.

Just doing some research for her :) Thanks.

Rebbekah,

Yes it can. One example is www.womenbizowners.org They are using joomla and they are a paid membership.

Yes, you can use AEC which is just OK or use JUGA. There are a few others. If the site can wait 1.6 should be out 1st Quarter and I know there will be betetr functionality for that.
You can also use Community Builder and manually turn it on.

I am working on a membership site using Joomla www.Training-Virtually.com and have incorporated a copy of CRELoaded shopping system into it.
I was planning on using the CRE for selling memberships and then directing the new customer to a hidden (from general public) registration page.

Rebbekah,

Both make membership sites. The question may be asked what do you want in a membership site.

Wishlist, http://member.wishlistproducts.com/wlp.php?af=1040537 (link to a friend's affiliate link) is one of the more popular wordpress membership plugins. There are also some other cool plugins, more developed on a regular basis. Because I know wordpress, I'd make a membership site on wordpress.

That said, a client wanted a very interactive membership site for her current group. http://www.joomlapolis.com/ great site for joomla as community builder info, may be more resources.
We looked at both, options, and was delighted she had Laura Wheeler create the new site on Joomla. I can't wait to see it. It'll be released in about a month.

So the question is what bells and whistles do they want on the community site. If simply log into pages available only to paid subscription, through paypal, etc and familiar with wordpress, I'd go that route. Otherwise see which has the features you want. There is also a wordpress mu one that would make a great membership site esp if you want each member to have their own blog. You have to have a host that would handle wordpress mu.

I've not learned joomla, thought about it once, decided to stick with wordpress and let the joomla experts handle joomla. Several on this board.

Reg, Thanks for the wordpress mu example. Some day I'll probably do something with mu.

Buddypress is the mu plugin for a community site that looked quite interesting. Not sure which of the membership plugins work well with mu.

When I have the need I'll check back with buddypress and other mu options, and where to host such. Always new things created.

Wordpress and cPanel reseller programs go hand in hand as they both use the same sub web naming procedures and it is easy to change a non paid subscriber's blog into a paid hosting account.
