Lamar Morgan 954-603-7901 | | If I use Powerpoint or OpenOffice's Presentation, the slide show looks pretty much the same. However, there is an online presentation service called Prezi that is really different. It puts all your slides on a single surface. Rather than fading or cutting from one slide to the next, you simply move around on the surface to the next slide. Once you arrive at the slide, you are free to zoom in for a close-up or zoom out for a wider angle.
If you were giving a "live" presentation to a physical audience, would you give the presentation the old-fashioned way or via Prezi?

Scott Wolpow | | Does not matter, slides are thge seasoning of the presentation, not the main course. Do not try to entertain the people with slides. One should never just read orate what is on the slide. The slides should be visual examples of what point you are making.Private Reply to Scott Wolpow |

When making a presentation that includes slides. ... I want control of how long each graphic stays visible.

Lamar Morgan 954-603-7901 | | Scott,
Last Sunday, I gave a workshop on social media. No slide. Just me standing up before a group going through a handout, which were for all intents and purposes printed slides. No one complained that I did not have slides showing on a big screen.
Now, maybe I am mistaken here, but I think people are more engaged in a presentation when they have something BIG to look at during a public presentation - like a projection screen or HDTV that is showing "something of interest."
I think a slide-show on a big screen is more interesting than a handout. A handout is obviously nice to have - especially to take home. But, I think a big screen slide show does a better job of focusing public attention. And, I think a slide show that rotates around on a map-like background adds to the fascination of the slide show presentation and helps folks comprehend what they have witnessed better. But, I suppose I could be all wrapped up in "eye candy." I do confess I like that sort of thing. It strikes me a great deal more entertaining than an ordinary slide show - even though the information that is imparted is the same as that from an ordinary slide show. I think the way a program is packaged really does matter.

Scott Wolpow | | Slides, handouts dancing bears. All the same thing. The key is to hold their attention with your talk. Give handouts at the end, unless they are needed to make a point. My Monday preseantion has six slides for the two of us. We are only goingbased on our knowledge. My best preseaantions have been without any prep work at all.Private Reply to Scott Wolpow |

Russ Jackman | | Hi Lamar,
Slides don't matter as much as the presenter ... and no amount of eye candy is going to replace a *good* presentation.
And, someone who is not a good presenter (i.e., who just reads off the slides verbatim) is not going to be helped by the eye-candy, as it will distract the audience from his/her message. Yes, they may not fall asleep as quickly, but they will not *learn more* ... in fact, I would wager they learn less due to the distraction and focusing on the method instead of the message.
Unfortunately, for too many people, a new way to do a presentation simply means there's a new way to do a bad presentation.Private Reply to Russ Jackman |

Lamar Morgan 954-603-7901 | | Okay Guys,
I get your drift. It is the presenter's knowledge and his ability to convey that knowledge that matters most. No argument there. But, did you see the Prezi video? If you watched the video and you have the opportunity to show slides for a public presentation - either the Prezi way or the Powerpoint way - which way would you choose? The old-fashioned way or the avante guard way?
