PageRank, Backlinks and EthicsViews: 511

I have a few questions:

1) Is PR (PageRank) really all that important?

2) Is getting backlinks a good way to achieve a higher PageRank?

3) Is there anything wrong with paying money to get a higher Page Rank - that is, for example, by donating to some cause whose site already has a high page rank to get them to backlink to your site? I ask this because I see it is being recommended by some folks. I just have to ask if this is ethically responsible or is there indeed something askew with this process? If you want to see an article about this, click here.

Lamar,
This is just personal opinion and some experience in the industry.

1) My initial comment on this one was not nice, but I am being good. OF COURSE PR is important! If people can't find you, how will they buy from you?

2) While content is the most important thing, in my opinion, I think links have replaced Organic SEO as the second most important factor in PR. Links are the quickest way to get indexed by the spiders and I have a strong feeling they put a high importance on links. The more people link to you, the more important your site is.

3) Do you mean besides the shadiness and questionable ethics? If you are going to donate or do volunteer work for an organization, it should be from the heart. Not because you want a backlink. While it could never be proven to google (etc.) that this was the reason you volunteered, it stinks and there will be a reckoning. One day.

These are just my opinions, Lamar.

If you look at Googles current tools PR no longer is mentioned. If you wish, just read here for more inofrmation. http://www.mediapost.com/publications/?fa=Articles.showArticle&art_aid=115613

The only really fact that I trust is this one:
Make pages primarily for users, not for search engines. Don't deceive your users or present different content to search engines than you display to users, which is commonly referred to as "cloaking."

Content is the once and future king. Good content will bring quality inbound links.
Paying for links is a sure way to get punished.
There are no short cuts, only work.

Another "sleight of hand" trick from Google.

It is because of the importance of Page Rank that they say "webmasters .. shouldn’t focus on PageRank so much.”

Google does not want us SEO'ers to focus on something to which they give high importance.
No "gaming" of their algos permitted.

To answer your questions Lamar.

>>1) Is PR (PageRank) really all that important?

YES! Right behind content and easy navigation and proper semantic presentation.

>>2) Is getting backlinks a good way to achieve a higher PageRank?

It is the only way to get PageRank
PR depends entirely on the quality of the links.
Quality refers to the relevance of the topic on the linking site to the anchor text used in the link and relevance of your site. Page rank is all about relevance and not so much about the PR of the site you are putting your link on.

>>3) Is there anything wrong with paying money to get a higher Page Rank - that is, for example, by donating to some cause whose site already has a high page rank to get them to backlink to your site?

Aside from Google saying that they devalue paid links?

And look what you get in that article.
You get a link on a high PR page.
You are shown as a donor. This has nothing to do with your content. This also means that Google knows you paid.
The PR of the page has to do with the importance of the topic (donations) to the company and it's audience, not the importance of your topic.

I am certain that Google factors in Relevance above the page's PR rating.
Page Relevance X Anchor text Relevance = Link Importance
Destination Page Relevance

On the question of ethics, that's something for your own determination, according to your values. 50 people could tell you it is right or wrong, but ultimately, you tell us, what you believe is the ethics of it.

On the usefulness, well you've had great feedback on that already.
