Course I may have to wait a year or so, worth the wait. Anyone else want one? Thoughts on the technology?

Heidi,

That is one amazing video. But, tell me, what exactly would you do with the product? How would you use it?

First, I'm assuming it'd require wireless internet available where ever you use it. Assuming it was available most places I go, I'd simply not carry a laptop around with me. I'd have access to all kinds of info on demand with a simple gesture, etc.

Heidi,

You would have to wear sensors on your fingers, right?

"sensors on your fingers" what he is wearing is colored marker caps. I'd prefer using different colors of fingernail polish. Either would work.

It'll be interesting to see what improvements they make to this over the next couple of years.

Great idea Teddy. I can think of other things I want too. This new thing I can wait a year or two while they make it better.

Heidi,

When this MIT whiz is playing pong on the floor of the bus or broadcasting an image on a wall and changing its contents with finger motions, where's the computer? Where's the projector that is projecting the image? Is he actually wearing the computer on his body and the projector on his head?

It sure is a neat gadget. There's only one sensor - the video camera. The whole device appears to be the size of an iPhone and is usually (but not always!) worn around the neck.

The real magic is the gesture recognition software. It manages to recognize fingers, hands, and feet as opposed to everything else in its view.

Sharper Image used to sell a keyboard that was similar (but much simpler). It would project a keyboard onto a flat surface and would recognize which key was being pressed. Not real great for touch typists, but cool otherwise.

Here's one review, from 2006:

Kurt,

Correct me if I am mistaken here, but the idea of using the laser keyboard is to hook it up to a cell phone. You may be typing on an image of a keyboard on a piece of page or plain cardbaord. But, what you are typing has to go somewhere. That place the data goes is within the cell phone, saved as a document. Correct?

The keyboard is just that - a keyboard. It hooks up to whatever device you choose - cellphone, laptop, evil monkey - whatever.

Remember, it's been around for several years. I'm sure the sixth sense device is much smarter and more sophisticated.

Kurt,

The keyboard is a projected image. In the video it is shown as being projected onto a piece of paper. Someone pushes the image of keyboard keys on that paper and letters are typed somewhere. It is truly amazing. I am just not sure how you would make practically apply this technology. Do you expect one day folks will be walking around wearing special head gear just so they can type on pieces of paper or on walls without the need of a laptop?

Actually this more advanced technology (not just the keyboard, but newer thing) is something that hangs around your neck, smaller either camera I like to carry. Smaller than carrying around a laptop. Closer to an iphone and minature projector around your neck.

A virtual keyboard doesn't take up any room on your desktop.

A virtual keyboard is unaffected by spills.

A virtual keyboard has no mechanical switches, so can be used in hazardous environments (even those containing explosive gasses).

all of these describe situations where a virtual keyboard could be useful.

No crumbs getting stuck in keys. No worn spots on keyboard.

My son broke the screen on his laptop somehow. He said maybe he sat his backpack down too hard. My guess is that he was riding his ripstick on campus while carrying his laptop in the padded backback. (I should have had that one pay extra and get an accident warranty, laptop was only a few months old.

Virtual monitor, no screen to break. :)

Smaller piece of equipment to go through airline security with.
