Church. It was first published in the old New York Sun, Newspaper. We take extreme pride in re-printing it this season especially for your pleasure and ours.
DEAR EDITOR: I AM ONLY 8 YEARS OLD AND SOME OF MY FRIENDS SAY THAT THERE IS NO SANTA CLAUS. MY DADDY SAYS, IF YOU READ IT IN THE NEWSPAPER, THEN IT MUST BE TRUE. PLEASE TELL ME THE TRUTH, IS THERE A SANTA CLAUS? VIRGINIA O'HANLON 115 W. 95TH ST. NYC, NY
Dear, Dear Virginia, Your little friends are wrong. They have been corrupted by a skeptical age. They do not believe except what they see. They think that nothing can exist that is not comprehensible by their young minds. All minds Virginia, whether they be adult's or children's are young and little. In this great universe of ours, man is a mere insect, an ant, in his intellect, compared to the boundless world around him, as measured by the intelligence capable of grasping the whole truth and knowledge. Yes (First name of your child), there is a Santa Claus! He exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist, and you know that they abound and give to your life its highest beauty and joy. How sad and dreary the world would be if there were no Santa Claus! It would be as sad and dreary as if there were no (your child's name) There would be no childlike faith then, no poetry, no romance to help tolerate our existence. We would have no joy except what we could see and hear. The eternal light from which a child sees the world would be snuffed out, extinguished. Not believe in Santa Claus! You might as well not believe in fairies. You might have your daddy watch all the chimneys on Christmas Eve to catch Santa Claus, but even if they didn't see Santa Claus coming down the chimney, what would that prove? Nobody sees Santa Claus! The most real things in the World are those things that neither children nor adults are able to see. Did you ever see fairies dancing on the lawn? Of course not, but that is not proof that they aren't there. No one can possibly conceive or even imagine all the wonders that are unseen and unseeable in the world. You tear apart a baby's rattle and see what makes the noise inside, but there is a veil covering the unseen world which not even the strongest man who ever lived, could tear apart. Only faith, belief, poetry, love and romance can push aside that curtain to catch a glimpse of the supernatural beauty and glory beyond. Is it real? Of course it is! Ah, (Your child's name), in all this world, there is nothing else that is as real. No Santa Claus? Bah! Humbug! Thank god he lives, now and forever! A thousand years from now, (Your child's name), ten times ten thousand years from now, he will continue to make glad the heart of childhood. As long as there are children, of course, (Your child's name), there will always be a Santa Claus and he lives in the hearts of good people everywhere. Yes, (your child's name), thank God there is a Santa Claus and a (Your child's name).
