Microsoft loses i4i appeal and must pay $290M and alter Word:

Do you think this will affect you? If so, how?

The winner can get a restraining order on January 11th and serve it on the largest sellers.
Also Microsft could not issue new liecenses.
But they will have the workaround long before then.

When I got a new netbook this past summer it came with a sample of the latest Word product.

After downloading and using Open Office, I saw no need to go with MS Office or Word as with Open Office I can save my documents in a .doc format so that Word users can open my documents.

Open Office is opensource freeware. It works great!

I do tend to rely on MS Office applications such as Excel and Word. When doing newsletters, brochures or other publications, I use Publisher.

I wouldn't be at a huge loss if MS decided to quit selling Word, because frankly I could always use Google Docs.

For the price ($0), Open Office has a very sophisticated suite of apps and they are all very robust, but last time I checked, it is a huge memory and resource hog. Almost as much or more than the MS Office Suite hogs.

So I'm sticking with Google Docs, if need be.

BJ,
If you're interested, the Open Office program has a PortableApps version that works from a thumb drive that is just 284 mb installed.
Using a thumb drive can mean more security as well as use on any PC without leaving a trace. Well, so claims U3.com, see their video for more info.

LA Times article:

Court says Microsoft violated patent, can't sell Word program after Jan. 11

The software giant says it is preparing a new version of the product, with the computer code in question removed, that will be ready for sale after the injunction takes effect.

A federal appeals court ordered Microsoft Corp. to stop selling its Word program in January and pay a Canadian software company $290 million for violating a patent, upholding the judgment of a lower court.

But people looking to buy Word or Microsoft's Office package in the U.S. won't have to go without the software. Microsoft said Tuesday that it expected that new versions of the product, with the computer code in question removed, would be ready for sale when the injunction takes effect Jan. 11.
