Now, if you have a Twitter account and you already have a Foursquare.com account, you likely know a little something about the lure of badges. People around the world love to be rewarded with badges. If you are not already a Twitter and Foursquare user, I highly recommend it. In fact, I recommend you open up an Osnapz account as well.

Check it out! I've got 32 badges on Osnapz now! See for yourself. Visit Osnapz for Lamar Morgan.

Now, you may not care at all about badges. But, this situation is not solely about what appeals to you. It's about what appeals to other folks. And, for many folks, badges are appealing. So, if you have already earned the recognition why not accept the adulation you can freely receive?

Kurt,

To me, badges are a form of branding. They help identify who you are to your audience. You get a diploma for college and what do folks often do? They put it up on the wall in their office. Why? It helps brand them to their audience. Is John Doe capable of doing the job? Oh, I see he has a degree in Engineering from FSU framed and up on his office wall?"

If you are a Twitter user, are you knowledgeable about how to use it or simply someone who signed up and clicked some "follow" links? How does anyone know your skill level? Badges help separate you from the crowd. Badges help you stand out. That is why people want them. They don't want to be "in" the masses. They want to "stand out" from among them.

Do you want to stand out? Add some badges to your online portfolio. Give your audience some enticing badge "eye candy."

I am just reminded of the line from Traesure of Sierra Madre 'Badges? We ain't got no badges. We don't need no badges! I don't have to show you any stinkin' badges!

Scott,

Not only are those badges a form of branding, but also recognition for accomplishments. You don't have to put on a cap and gown to graduate from high school. But, people do. Why? Because they like the recognition. Why do Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts pursue merit badges and then wear those badges on their clothing? Answer - they want to be recognized for their accomplishments.

If you join Foursquare, you can be recognized for simply showing up at a restaurant and "checking in" with Foursquare. Why not give it a shot with your Verizon Droid?
