With Social Media so BIG, Do You Really Need a Web Site?Views: 517

Hey Folks.

Here is an excerpt from an article at WebProNews that might
give you an idea that yeah, you do still need a web site:

Why it Still Pays to Have a Site

Can you be successful without a site? I think so. However, having a site gives you a more stable foundation,
and still creates more opportunities than if you didn't have one. When you have a site, you have control.
You don't have to adhere to the policy guidelines of any third-party platform. If Facebook decides to shut its
Pages down (as Yahoo did with GeoCities, for example), you still have your own site that they can't touch.
For that matter, having your own site certainly lends credibility to your brand."

Mostly the above article is promoting social media and has
some links to "how to's" for some Facebook stuff too. I
did not click on those links so if they turn out to be not
of use to you, don't shoot the messenger.

So what's you take on this subject?
DO business still a web site or do they do OK with social
media only?

Eileen,

Here's my take on this topic. You need a main presence on the Internet. For most folks that's a a website. It's your base of operation - your headquarters. If folks want to reach you for some reason, this website is where folks should be encouraged to come. But, to solely rely on a website to draw attention to your business I think is a mistake. You aslo need a blog. This is ideal for prospect/customer feedback. Then, you need Social Media resources to expand your audience - like Twitter, Facebook, Foursquare and others.

I think there is something more important (and less expensive) than a website - a domain.

Having your own domain makes you "real" and not just some wannabe trying to make do on the cheap using Gmail or Yahoo for their email.

That said, you can do a lot with just Facebook and Twitter accounts, and maybe a Blogger account and an eBay store. But having your own domain is the start of independence and credibility.

Kurt,

Maybe not as fast as a tweet, but more powerful than a domain name, and able to leap across the Internet in the single click of a mouse button is something money cannot buy...a true friend. Therefore, how awesome it would be if every Ryze network was composed of true friends. The amazing dynamic of true friendship is reciprocal help. Indeed, strength is demonstrated through mutual collaboration efforts that stems from brainstorming in small groups.

My hope is that a certain Meetup Group in Northern California transforms itself over time into a group of strong friends. Would you like to help and give them a little guidance or encouragement? If so, I invite you to join them. Here's the link - Lake County Social Media Group.
