He did such that same night. He is not an SEO expert, expert programmer yes who saw a niche to fill. He opened it up to others to add relevant articles and he uses the best ones.
3 weeks later his blog http://howtonode.org/ (which is geek to me) has 400 google subscribers, hit the front page of 2 technical PR 7 websites, along with many other referrals. He is guessing from looking at google analytics he has about 1000 reading his blog. He has already received a request for an interview from a reader that would like to hire him. It has reinforced his position as an expert in that niche. He'll know later this week if he is speaking a the OKC Ruby convention.
Content is still king. Although I don't understand all he is talking about, I recognize that he filled in a gap in his niche, and got the word out to others in his niche. The rest took care of itself. No google ads, etc, yet I can easily see how this blog pays for itself. This same principle would apply to any niche blog, even those not written in geek.
