Today I would like us to share our networking tips.

I was on a conference call today and the host said that one of her main methods of list building is Social Media...like we are doing here...How do you use Social Networking to build your list?

Hi Sherry

Good question. I've seen people use their blog and their Facebook Fan pages to build their lists by including a newsletter sign up on their Facebook fan page, or by setting up a subscription prompt on their blog, so that when the blog is updated, readers are notified via e-mail.

I've yet to do either of these, but I think they are effective , provided if what we've got to say on our blogs and Facebook pages is captivating and gets people to want more.

Who here has a Facebook Fan page for promoting their business?

Here's mine:

Sherry,

I try to use third-party programs to help me build my audience. I know some folks see automation of lead generation as a bad thing. But, I believe there is a safe middle ground.

For example, I like that Mr. Tweet will find folks for me to add to my Twitter list without my having to search for them. I still must select them. I like that a service like Socialoomph will send out delayed Tweets for me. That way I can put out all my Twitter messages first thing in the morning or later than evening for the following day. I like it that I can to some extent automate the process - thus making both my computer and Internet communication my slave - rather than the other way around.

I heard that scheduled Tweets are good, but I would make sure they're not repetitive and that you also have actual conversations in Twitter with folks, or else your followers list will shrink!

Just my obvservation, from what folks have been saying.

This article is a good resource of how and why to blend your human self with the robotic Tweeting services out there:

Bobbi Jo,

I agree with you. Avoid repetition. It's SPAMMY and will do more harm than good. What works is to deliver something of value. That is all too often a lot easier to say than it is to do. However, anything worth doing is worth doing well.

Did you read that article? It's got some good points in it, and some that are seemingly up for discussion (which there is a heap of, in the comments following the post).

Here are some tips that are working for me:

1) Limit the number of people you follow on Twitter. My limit is around 200 - more than that and the firehose of tweets overwhelms me. You do NOT have to follow everyone who chooses to follow you!

2) Make sure your Facebook friends truly are friends - people you actually know - rather than just names you've stumbled across. You'll get more dialogs and discussions going that way than with a bunch of strangers.

3) Set up a Fan Page in Facebook for your business. Use it to separate your business announcements from your personal interactions. The people who want to know about your daily specials do not necessarily want to know about the health of your cat, and a Fan Page is a good way to separate your two personae.

4) Become a Facebook Fan of as many of your competitors as you can. (This is how to do your competitive research.)

5) Link to outside (non-Facebook) resources as often as you can in the messages you post to your Fan Page. This will help make your messages more valuable to your fans, and will result in a steady increase of fans.

6) Include pictures in your Facebook posts whenever you can. A simple way to do this is to have a blog, include a picture in the blog post, and then link to the blog post in your Facebook message. Facebook is smart enough to automatically put a thumbnail of the blog picture next to the message. (At least it works for me!)

Note that most of these tips involve Facebook. I find Twitter is more useful for "blasting" links, while Facebook is better at interacting with other users.

Bobbi Jo,

I did read the article, but not all the comments. I am in agreement with the article. Twitter alone is not Social Media. That's like saying TV alone is social media.

To me, Social Media is multi-dimensional. It's not simply being on one service - be that one service Facebook, Twitter, Ryze or Squidoo. Instead, it is being linked to many different venues and having them connect to each other. I do not think its a coincidence that Twitter, Facebook, Foursquare are all connected to each other. It is actually part of their grand design.

I personally think that every display ad you place in a newspaper deserves to have a link to a web page included in it - what many refer to as a "landing page." This enhances the value of the ad without increasing its cost.

Bottom line, thinking "better together" is good business sense.

Kurt,

I am not all that well-acquainted with what Facebook can do. But, what you suggest sounds like a good idea to me.

Have you considered Foursquare at all? Both Facebook and Twitter are connected to it. Through Foursquare you can easily increase the size of your audience on both Facebook and Twitter, simultaneously. But, that is not really the reason why you should have a Foursquare account.

You NEED a Foursquare account to enhance the customer traffic into your scooter store. Just because Foursquare works wonders for places to eat, does not mean the same innovation cannot prove valuable for a scooter store. My goodness, even Bravo TV is making productive use of Foursquare. Want proof? Watch the video - Foursquare on Bravo TV.

That video clip is rather short. What you really need to better understand Foursquare is the ABC TV interview with Foursquare co-founder, Dennis Crowley. Click here.
