My observation is that most accidents involve one or more commercial vehicle(s). Since the drivers of commercial vehicles spend more hours per day on the road than that of the private vehicles.

The drivers of these vehicles need to re-oriented towards safe driving practices, observing road signs and conventions.

The second most errant drivers are the two wheelers riders. They seem to be driving to die.

Last but not the least let there be space for pedestrians on all roads.

Accidents will drop eventually.

first of all, all roads should have speed limits and clearly put. Police should strictly add fine to anyone speeding. There should be unwritten rules for :
1) Emergency vehicles have right of way
2) School zone limit is 20 Km/hr at least 500 ft before and after a school
3) Traffic should come to a complete stop when kids get in and get off school buses/rickshaws/ autos. A Clear STOP sign should be displayed by the school transport vehicles each time they stop for the kids.
4)Speeding tickets should be related to the driving license.

The idea is that you store the word ICE in your mobile phone address book, and with it enter the number of the person you want to be contacted 'In Case of Emergency'. It's such a simple idea, but it could save ambulance crews and hospital staff time and would ensure that a patient's loved one was contacted as soon as possible.

Mobile Phones, Alchohol, rash drive for fun especially two wheelers.

Many people use mobile phone on the drive especially riding two wheelers. They think that this is a fashion. Its really dreadful

Alchohol If anybody consumes alchohol and happened to met an accident. He is just a piece of log for 24 hours. Because they cannot treat a alchoholic person.

Rash drive youngsters risk their lives.

In all the above the victims are innocents not the above three set of people.

Roads and speed breakers play important role. Speed breaks can be avoided if that is not necessary.

Traffic chaos happen when two wheelers and autorickshaw awkwardly ride or drive on the wrong side importantly on the traff jams.

I think there are 2 problems here. The first is as a culture we do not follow rules leave alone road rules. So any unattended sign remains that a sign meant to be glanced at and do what we do. The root of this problem needs to be solved at the School level and in a fundamental way. If kids are instructed to follow rules, comply with the larger good rather than do what is expedient like their parents do, it will bring about a sea change. Unfortunately we focus on physics and chemistry and math alone and such things even if taught are like a requirements tick mark.
Until the first problem is solved we need loads of ruthless enforcement and monitoring. Speeding tickets, sobreity checks, fines for minor rules infraction and over and above the expectation that anyone who has a licence should know the rules(enakku teriyalae pa ippadi panna kudathu nnu). However the second problem is only a drop in the ocean, it is school level education and attitude setting that will save us from further accidents.

Subject: Road Accidents and Road Safety
Date: Apr 13, 2010 1:29 am
From: Ken Hilving

Dear Sir,

Forgive me for speaking up on your local issues, where I have no first hand knowledge to speak from. Your post seems sincerely interested in improving safety and reducing accidents, and in that vein I will share some thoughts from abroad with you.

The following information comes from the US Federal Highway Administration.

1) Roadway Safety Audits
State DOTs should formalize the use of these audits, which are comprehensive evaluations of existing or planned roads or intersections to identify potential safety improvements.

2) Rumble Strips and Rumble Stripes
Used in centerline and shoulders, these cost-effective devices have shown demonstrable improvement in warning drivers of lane departure, reducing by 14 percent head-on collisions and opposite-direction sideswipe crashes. Shoulder rumble strips and stripes have shown a 38 percent reduction in run-off-road crashes on freeways, and between 13-18 percent on rural roads.

3) Median Barriers
Used to separate opposing traffic on divided highways, these barriers have a long track record of reducing cross-median collisions. States are encouraged to consider using cable median barriers where appropriate to further heighten roadway safety.

4) Safety Edge
This paving technique, giving a 30 to 35 degree slope to the road’s edge, reduces the risk to drivers if their tire inadvertently falls over an otherwise near-vertical road-edge leading to loss of vehicle control and rollover crashes. Safety Edge makes such notoriously severe crashes far less likely.

5) Roundabouts
Roundabouts have demonstrated a 60 to 87 percent reduction in crashes.

6) Turning Lanes at Stop-Controlled Intersections
At intersections with significant turning volume, turning lanes for right and left turns on major road approaches can dramatically reduce crashes — in some cases, by as much as 55 percent.

7) Yellow Change Intervals
Red-light running crashes at intersections, which too frequently result in fatalities, can be reduced by properly setting yellow-light signals. Studies show a one-second increase in the yellow signal interval can reduce red-light violations by as much as 50 percent.

8) Medians and Pedestrian Refuge Areas in Urban and Suburban Areas
Raised medians or pedestrian refuge areas at pedestrian crossings at marked crosswalks have shown a 46 percent reduction in pedestrian crashes. FHWA recommends that medians be between 4 and 8 feet wide to improve pedestrian safety.

9) Walkways
Ensuring a sidewalk or pathway exists near a roadway can reduce pedestrian crashes by as much 88 percent. FHWA recommends a pathway of at least 4 feet wide of stabilized or paved surface in areas routinely used by pedestrians.

Several communities have also reported success with improving driving by eliminating rules. The logic is that individuals rely on traffic signs rather than their own common sense, and that by removing the crutch of regulations they will adjust their behavior appropriately as a survival response. Here is a link to a Reuters article on this: http://www.reuters.com/article/idUSGOR14512420070911

My personal experience as a youth leader (soccer coach, FIFA referee, Scout leader) is that people respond much better to positive reinforcement than to negative reinforcement. I wonder if a program that randomly rewarded good drivers might be more effective than giving citations for poor driving? The rewards might be as simple as a free treat, or a "smiley" sticker for placement on the vehicle. Following this line of thought, a speed actuated traffic light that "smiled" at vehicles driving at safe speeds and distances might be very effective. Everyone likes to be thanked once in awhile, and such a sign might thank thousands of drivers each day.

Best of luck with your efforts, sir.

Sincerely,
Ken

Discipline is must while crossing road,

As Mohan clearly said school level teaching is vital for a person to know the road crossing.

I even dont remember the name of my teacher who taught me how to cross road, but i still remember the method of crossing the road. First you have to listen the right side, then left and once again right. This was taught to me before 30 years, But today i have been listening both sides of the road for atleast 5 times before crossing the road, since the traffic today is heavy.

Of course parking on both sides of the road is strictly not allowed especially in the arterial roads. This will ease many traffic snarls and again leads to safe driving.

Many dont know the signals properly, Many people(cars) i notice on the road use to switch on the parking lights to go to a straight road which is not a proper signal.

People who use cellphones while crossing road or level crossing also be charged fine.

Many very intelligently use mobile phone inside their helmets(two wheelers) or holds in their hands while driving and raise the windows(cars). Surprisingly many ladies do these.

Jaywalkers should be charged and put into mobile court. The height of the road medians should be atleast more than 1 and half meter.

There is an association who is going to launch a road discipline called Platform for pedastrians.

Although we implement strict rules it should come from their own mind about safety.

Thirudanai parthu thirunda vittal thiruttai ozhikka mudiyadhu. Likewise safety should come from themselves.

"Platform for pedastrians" . . . may be exactly as the name suggests . . .

MB - 1.5 meter road dividers mean 5 feet tall . . . impossible to look at what is on the other side for a seated driver unless she gets out of the car and stands on the top (if it not a convertible) . . . . or maybe the vehicle being driven is a pickup truck!

1. Helmet is not an insurance against bad driving!

2. Declare the cities / towns as no horn zone.

3. Pedestrians have the first right of way at zebra crossings.

4. Children have the first right of way near the schools.

5. Autos slow down the traffic. Replace autos with safer four-wheeled public transport vehicles. Few models to be launched in the coming years.

Two accidents this Sunday

First
On the National Highways just before Chengalpat, a two wheeler rider was run over by a Govt Bus. The rider was not wearing a helmet. It was horrible to see only the skull was crushed and spread all over the road. I was able to see even his face which was clear and no damage to any other parts. A good helmet worn properly might have saved his life.

But a doubt, can a helmet save a life even when run over by a heavy vehicle like a bus.

Second
Read in news paper that and heard on TV. This happened near Tindivanam again on the name NH. It seems a repair bus was stranded on the road and the passengers from the bus came down and was waiting for the pickup bus infront of the bus. It was when another heavy vehicle rammed at the back of the stranded bus. The impact was so hard that the bus moved and the passengers who were standing infront to board th spare bus was run over. It seems three died on the spot. What a horrible incident and fate. This accidents explains how much careful we should be when on road.

Police Sir,

This complaint is very much about your fellow Police personal in Chennai.

I never see any respect for the pedestrians. Already all the pavements are occupied by hawkers. In the signals where there are no subways there was literally no time given for the pedestrians to cross the roads. Though there was a time given for them, the vehicles start moving when the opposite signal goes red and don't wait till their signal goes green. This act is very much encouraged by invariably by all the Police personals who are controlling the traffic. How to get some reprieve for this. It used to be really horrible when we see the aged finding it hard to cross the signals. Already they would have walked a considerable distance to find a place to cross without the median. After that crossing would also be a hardship with a non-considerate vehicle riders/drivers.

A shocking scene.....

It seems a four wheeler - mini lorry kind of vehicle was having a problem and was parked in the middle of the road in a very busy road in Chennai. Though this is a traffic violation by itself, this is not the news I wanted to share here.

I was shocked to see the driver under the vehicle very much near the tyre of the vehicle trying to sort out some repair issue in the vehicle. There was no warning behind the vehicle that the vehicle is stagnant and someone is under it. More shocked to see two humans sitting in the driver cabin and chatting - didnt even mind to get down and stand alongside or behind the vehicle. I was forced to imagine on some fast moving vehicle hitting this stagnant vehicle from behind and this stagnant vehicle in that process move a little thus causing injury to the driver who was under the vehicle.

When everyone comes across many freak accidents and accidents take fraction of a second to happen and make it fatal still we are so careless when on road.

road accidents can break bones . . . there are also other accidents due to rash and negligent behavior . . . one must always be very careful on any pathway . . . with the words one chooses to address or refer to others present . . . . a loose word uttered in anger without any truth behind it haunts till eternity . . . it can not be forgotten even if forgiven after due remorse . . . .

Rajnikanth ? what do think of Traffic polikaar , soeb fatehi? Is he that old or is he that bald?

No..I object..you should have mentioned ...emmm charu? na
Kamal ? na - asal ajith? na iLaya thalabathi vijai? na na
then? badmash shahid? nananana

Ok I agree Rajni is the only apt actor to compare..come to think of it

what we see the side screen looks exactly like Rajni in shivaji na?
only shreya missing ..

Santa Singh sent me sms that he had the great opportunity to meet traffic police kaar and both of them had a nice dinner at 12 hours in the noon.

you still have to know lot, soeb fatehi.

My twitter fans have grown so much that Sachin is asking tips from me.

It is learnt,

Poor Sushi (rich with gold coins and now some other amounts too) is busy filing a application under RTI with BSNL chennai.
I only know brief details that BSNL Chennai activated the backup service for her mobile within 3 seconds and took 4 months to deactivate the same. That too after her having telecon with TRAI director. Now though she has received the refund of Rs. 150/- charged for the four months, she says she will fight for the aam aadmi who is enduring the ringtones, caller tunes backup service etc just because the outsourcing agencies turn a blind eye on their deactivating requests.

So let her be with RTI and appellate aurthority etc etc.

Such things are not for LK(g)

She never believes in bureaucratic approach nor in bureaucratic baabus.

yeah . . . LK(g) could have just told Aslam Genda to beat the babu to pulp like how once she had told Anwar Hippo to do to Chikna Shinde the railway police constable who took way her friend Swapna Roti's marbles at Badlapur Station . . . . even the drunken sailors from Bhaucha Dhakka enjoyed watching our brawls in those days . . . .

Soeb Fatehi, do I hear correctly?

Did we do anything to improve the traffic sense of Chandigarh which has brought out the appreciation from none other than the
"Traffic Policekaar'?

Pudumai, Nice to know hat you are too duty conscious that you have sacrificed sight seeing. But did you taste

Baingan da Bhurtha
Lassi Patiala in those long st. steel glasses
Makki di Roti
Sarson ka Saag

I am told Pubjabkars use washing machines for making lassi.

Soeb Fatehi never play with fire or police kaar.

What a meant was normal police kaar takes care of our house safely and valubles kept inside safety

whereas

Pudumai like traffic Police kaar takes care of road accident safety oooopps road safety ..

we should never make mix up of these two categories as are altogether two different categories.

But suppose a car accidentally enters the house and creates an accident and the driver while escaping takes away the jewelry and valubles from the house, who will come? police kaar or traffic kaar?

No doubt, Pondi Traffic Police kaars are round and sound like tamil nadu police kaars . ( just a observation and nothing to take to heart , Charu and give a senti lecture as how traffic kaars stretch their hands and hearts to save our lives) I am sure Pudumai will take any comments sportively
