Ron Sam | | Anyone using a Verizon USB760 modem to get broadband when you travel?
I've been away from home for 4/7 days a week due to becoming my mom's caretaker/advocate after she became ill and had to have emergency surgery 3/11/10. Now I'm missing my internet and got the USB760. I found a service that is month to month and $50/mo for 5GB and $0.20/mb thereafter. I like the no contract bit since I am hoping Clear.com will have their Wimax available in the SoCal area some time soon. I think they only charge $40/mo for unlimited usage. (heck, when I was in Scandinavia last Sept, I saw ads for the same for ~ $15/mo. The US has to charge more - why?)
I'm wondering what are the differences in a 3G vs. DSL router. Are they using different frequencies? I want to use the USB760 as input to a portable router to be able to use more that one wi-fi device that connects to the net but don't want to spend the extra cost of a MiFi account or device.
Also is there a method to optimize on utilization of the 5GB / month allotment before going into add-on cost for additional MBs?

Is Sprint available in your area? If it is, I would check and see when Sprint 4G will be available - if it is not already available. Spring has a MiFi device that makes Internet access available wherever you go. The device is about the size of a domino and has only an on/off button on it to work. It will provide Internet access I believe to as many as five different devices, simulaneously. Great device - provided the service is available in your area.

In reading the link you provided, the impression I get is that Sprint's MiFi device is a much better deal than the one provided by Verizon. But, just last Thursday, I was at a networking event where someone was bad-mouthing Sprint in favor of Verizon. So, who knows which is the better device? Both are made by the same company - Nextel. However, I think the basic idea behind the MiFi device - taking the Internet with you wherever you go - is a good one. For that reason, one of these days I hope to be the owner of a MiFi device. What am I waiting for? I am waiting for my area of Florida to become Sprint 4G compatible.
