About GOONJ.. : Winner of 'Indian NGO of the Year' Award, 2007
GOONJ is a unique resource mobilization initiative providing clothes & other basic amenities to millions in the far-flung villages. It turns cities wastage into a resource for rural India. Initiated with just 67 clothes, today over 40 tons of material is sent across the country every month. A force of over 300 volunteers, GOONJ is implementing its initiatives through a nationwide network of over 150 grassroots organisations, Panchayats, Ashoka Fellows & social activists, in parts of 21 states of India.
VASTRA-SAMMAN: a nationwide movement..
The basic need of Clothing is only highlighted as an issue during disasters even though most of India doesn’t need a disaster to be helped. VASTRA-SAMMAN channelises vital resources lying underutilized in urban households, to rural India. The effort goes beyond the realm of ‘charity’ and plays a crucial role in the development process.
Cloth For Work: Old clothes as a resource for village development
Cloth is a synonym of dignity. To restore it through our programmes GOONJ and its grassroots partner groups involve the local villagers in addressing their own neglected development issues; they get clothes in turn; as a motivation and not as a charity. In the remote villages of Assam, Bihar, West Bengal, Orissa, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh & many other states; roads have been repaired, wells have been dug up, school boundary walls built & cleanliness/plantation drives initiated without any financial transaction.
‘School to School’ (S2S): Winner of Changemakers’ Innovation Award
S2S supports thousands of resource starved rural and slum schools by turning the wastage of urban school children into a resource for them. By sensitizing urban students & their parents about the needs of their less fortunate counterparts; material like old books, uniforms, shoes, school bags, etc. are channlised to thousands of village children, motivating them towards learning. PRATIBIMB, our annual interface event brings together urban & rural children from across the country, building a better empathy and understanding about each other’s life.
Not Just a Piece of Cloth: cloth sanitary napkins for women (Winner of World Bank’s DM Award)
Countless women in villages use dirty, useless cloth during 5 days of menses, leading to many infections and diseases. A woman used a piece of blouse and died of tetanus due to the hook inside. GOONJ.. is providing clean cloth napkins to rural/slum women and is actively campaigning in rural & urban India to generate awareness on this taboo issue.
RAHAT: relief efforts for disaster hit people (Winner of Changemakers Innovation Award)
Known for its need-based and systematic relief work, GOONJ.. has been active in relief operations during all the major disasters since the Chamoli earthquake in 1999. The emphasis is on the most neglected disasters like people dying of cold in winters & annual floods across India. GOONJ emerged as one of the biggest relief agencies in the recent floods in Bihar.
