“Son I find you leaving in that Jalopy of yours on most Friday evenings with a few of your friends and coming back Monday morning for court work.”
`Yes …Dad! ”
“I know you smoke. I suspect you drink. I do not know what else you do.”
I was silent.
“I would like you to get married……….”
I just looked up at him… to mean `why this sudden idea?’
“I want to put a load on your purse …… To keep you in a straight path.”
` Sorry. I do not believe in the system of marriage. I have seen yours ……and it has been rotten.’
“Listen son. You were born because I married your mother. You too need sex in your life and I want you to get married.”
` Dad! If you are bothered about my sex, don’t worry I know where to find it and when to find as the necessity arises.’
“If you find your own sex you would be called a lecher. When I find yours it would be called the holy marriage.”
To make the long story short this idea of the parents doing the job of finding a wife for me appealed to me. Even as son of a famous man around town and a practicing lawyer I did not seem to attract any smart young lady to fall for me. The mediocre and also the ugly ones kept their distance. I ended up saying yes. My father being a Ghandian and a man who had kept his relations at bay by having lunch or dinner with at least one gentleman from the depressed class everyday asked me
“Have you any body in mind?”
`I had once But that does not matter.’
“Tell me.” He seemed nonplussed
I said,
`It was Rita Hay worth. Who played the lead in the film Blood And Sand. She was almost fifteen years my senior. She fell for Prince Aly Khan and married him.’
He laughed.
‘If you are serious about my choice being important, get one from the slums from one of those congress diner’s daughters. It would help you in the coming elections at least. “
