well first of all I would have to ask myself - - what or who is a local market follower?

To make my point or to be sure It is seen. I use an API build and message from my website each message once per day every hour at various times during the day.

A network of friends that you could get to do a re-tweet for you is effective as well. If you can make a popular subject out of a local and get a local network of member to tweet your tweet, they may pay more of attention. Because a network of people often works more effectively than an individual.

I use API, because I don't have a cell phone or easy access to twitter.

Jeff,

Here's a tip you might be able to use.

Use hash tags and put a key word as your hash tag that reaches the local market your targeting. Any searches in Twitter .... by someone interested in that particular "key word" ... your Tweet would show up.

For example #NewYork ...... #cellphone ..... #localbiz ..... #Indiana ..... and so on.

API - Application Programming Interface

learn more about it here http://dev.twitter.com/doc

should be able to log in with your twitter info.

All you really need is a php based server and mysql database accessed the php page with a cronjob and set how often the cronjob should access that php page you built and uploaded to your server in a secret place.

Sure there are other applications that will do this for you, but it requires you to share your personal twitter account information with a third party server.

I basically came up with 25 different things and the php page chooses from these 25 in random order then date stamp so the posts are not exactly the same because twitter will not permit that.

I rarely access my twitter account since the API build.
My twitter is http://twitter.com/bettermember

As you can see my posts are made just about every hour. Sometimes it will skip an hour later in the day because it tries to post the same thing with the same date stamp, but you can put as many different tweet topics as you want on your php page for it to choose from.

There are a lot of different styles and API session types as they upgrade the features frequently but google twitter api documentation, you will find lots of documents to help you get started.

As for target marketing with twitter, I agree with Michael. # is the best way to target that particular area of interest.

Hope this was informative,
Jim

Plain Layout of what I use and how I use it.

I have a godaddy server, It permits php pages, mysql database, and cronjobs.

PHP Pages are interactive pages that present a fairly different layout each time called by the use of variables.

MySql Database - contains the variables for your website.

cronjobs - are scheduled tasks operated by your website host for you which you set terms to.

EXAMPLE of a php page :
http://www.brownphp.com/2009/01/use-php-to-twitter-your-tweets/

More examples and builds can be found by searches on twitter php examples. Just find the one that best works for your expectations.

1st Build it with note pad from your computer

2nd upload it to your server, to a location that only you will know.

3rd Set a cronjob through your web server to call that specific file on an hourly schedule.

That's pretty much it. Check twitter to be sure your php page is working, to be sure you can access the page just by calling the link in your browser (best to book mark it) then check your twitter page.

It's really not as difficult as it sounds, plus keeps you from sharing any of your personal account information and password with any 3rd party server, that maybe your just not real sure of.

Any questions at all feel free to ask, that's what networking is for Jeff.

Yes Walter,

Same basic Idea. Sokule is a third party social media site that will allow you to program 25 tweets and they will post them for you but you will have to go back in and reprogram your tweets as twitter will not permit double tweets.

Yes the pages that Sokule makes are php and mysql driven. Although this is a third party client.

Downside, as I've said is that you have to share your twitter account name and passwword with sokule. Under your posts that sokule would make for you those under which would state
(about x hours ago via sokule)
Mine says(about x hours ago via API).

Facebook, myspace, and quite a few other applications are capable of posting your tweets as well.

sokule, from one of my fan pages, and wishpot, are all third party applications either online or application for a cell phone. But odds are that they all use an interactive site such as PHP.

Learning to develop these pages with PHP yourself, keeps your information more secure, as you wouldn't have to share your account information with anyone.
