Eight years ago when my son Brian Michael passed away in 2003, we received lots of flowers and I lost track of a lot of them. Family members took them home with them and my mother took several and of course I took a few. I never really thought about those flowers again until 6 years later.
When we moved in to our new log home in January 2009, my mother and sister started bringing me shrubs and flowers from their yards so I would have something to plant in my new yard right away.
My mom brought me a red azalea that she had planted and saved from the funeral for all these years. I have an Angel Garden for Brian so I was thrilled to have a plant from his funeral to plant in the Angel Garden.
The biggest surprise was when my sister casually mentioned that my mother has a Curly Willow tree that she grew from a sprout of DRIED Curly Willow that was stuck in one of the floral arrangements.
You know that long curly wood florists stick in plants for decorations? That is Curly Willow.
Well, MY mother took those long curly dry pieces of wood, put them in water and ROOTED them. She then planted one in her yard and in 6 years it had grown into a TREE.
When she showed it to me I was so excited. I cut off several young looking limbs and took them home to put them in water to root - and they did root. In about a week they had tender pink roots shooting out all around.
When the roots were a few inches long, I planted the sprouting limbs and they grew quickly. Soon I was able to take limbs from the trees I planted.
I rooted limb after limb and planted them all over my yard. I'm still rooting and still planting, even giving some to my neighbors.
Who knew my wonderful mother was saving this miraculous plant for all those years so that I could have a memories of Brian all over my yard now.
