It's no consolation, but 95% of people just don't get it about backup. Hardware may come and go, but cost of hardware is nothing compared to your data.
Personally I have multiple redundant backups that back up automatically ***every single day***. It absolutely has to be automatic, else even with all best intentions you will forget. Today, the cost of storage is so low, it is not a problem. Also, multiple backup options online are available including for free (dropbox.com etc).
Anyway, hope you get your data, and do set up a backup!!!

I do not use online storage for various reasons.
With that much of data, I certainly would not go for online.
Personally at home my laptop is always on and connected to an external hard disk. I use a backup program (Backup4All) that does a daily backup at 4AM every morning. Then on the 1st of every month I backup that backup to another external hard drive. For my systems at work, they backup to a FTP server running on one of the PCs ***at a different location*** (using same software). The FTP server is FileZilla and it is excellent and free.
