Hello, I'm trying to move to Williamsburg, Astoria, from Atlanta. What do you think is the smoothest transition? I have been looking on rooms for rent on Craigs list. How long does it take to land a place? One friend suggested I get a sublet for a month until I can land a place, then go back and get my stuff. What do you all think>

well, everything in NY is a function of what you're willing to spend - willamsburg is a pretty bohemian scene - lots of loft space and unfinished places for you & all your art gear. it's starting to get pricey though.

astoria is more ethnic and less "artsy".

frankly, manhattan is where it's at, so you might want to consider Chelsea, East Village or even Downtown/Financial District.

there are a couple of ways to secure an apartment - you can use a broker, but that's really expensive because they usually want 10% of your annual rent for a fee. a good place to start hunting is the Village Voice (i think they're online too). if you have the money, it doesn't take long to close a deal. summer is a good time to look, but come august, it get's a bit more challenging because all the college kids are back.

there's also a service called RoomMate Finders which i've heard is great for short-term situations.

when you get here, drop me a line and i can tell you more. good luck!
