The absolute BIGGEST mistake you can make at a trade show is to do what EVERYONE does -- Hand out your biz cards and/or brochures, etc.
I say, DO NOT HAND OUT *ANY* SALES MATERIALS at a trade show!
Trade shows are ***NOT*** for handing out biz cards!
Having a trade show booth is for ***COLLECTING/GETTING*** biz cards from the people who visit your booth!!!
...and if you bring ***ANY*** biz cards, etc. then people will ask you for them -- and you'll give them out.... and if you give out biz cards (when tempted to), you are SUNK!
On the other hand, if you DO NOT bring ***ANY*** sales materials (biz cards, brochures, etc.), and people say "do you have any brochures?" you can honestly respond by saying: "NO, I DO NOT have any brochures or biz cards...... BUT, if you give me YOUR biz card, I will... (etc.)"
Again, having a trade show booth is NOT for handing out your sales materials!!! Having a trade show booth is for COLLECTING/GETTING the biz cards of potential future customers. Getting THEM to give YOU *THEIR* biz card!!!!
That way YOU have CONTROL over the future CONTACT.
To be semi-sexist about it: When a GUY meets a woman, he knows he MUST get HER number! -- Conversely, he knows if he gives HER HIS number, nothing will ever happen!!!
What's the difference?
CONTROL over future contact!
If you don't keep CONTROL over future contact, YOU ARE SUNK!
In summary: DON'T EVEN *BRING* any biz cards or brochures, etc.!!!
Doing so is the NUMBER ONE trade show mistake (and, sadly, it's a mistake almost every exhibitor makes!)
