It's so critical for business owners to understand who they want to work with and then to be courageous enough to stick to that.
In my early days as a small business consultant, I worked with anyone who had business problems. I have earned many thousands of dollars from business owners who spent all my time getting them out of trouble. Then they immediately would get themselves into more trouble. For example, one outspoken business owner was constantly getting himself in legal trouble because he would call employees "old woman" or reveal personal information like "Joe is gay but he's getting therapy for it." Good grief!
Yes, I earned lots of money from businesses like this but it was intensely stressful and frustrating. Now, I only work with business owners who are really trying to succeed, have a plan for the future, are intelligent and fun to work with, and understand the value of what I do. It makes being self employed so much easier when you enjoy the people you work with and so much more fun when you see the results you achieve together.
