that all one has to do to properly clean a toilet bowl is to turn the water blue???? That's what my buddy says.

Ken,

I don't know about turing the water blue, but white vinegar works great!

I just pour bleach into the bowl and let it set for awhile. DON'T pour bleach into the tank, however, since it will eat the hoses and pipes and so on.

Marguerite,

Say it isn't so!!! If bleach can "eat the hoses and pipes" of your toliet, what do you think it can do to your body? Not to mention, using bleach in the toliet, or any other place where it is flushed down drains, is only adding to the insurmountable amount of toxins in our water.

Chlorine bleach is respiratory irritant to the mucous membranes and lungs. Chlorinated liquids burn the skin and many fabrics. As little as 3.5 ppm can be detected as an odor.

Here's an article, which I hope will change your mind about using chlorine bleach and switch to something natural, like white vinegar.

Turn the water blue? *laugh* The newest toilet cleaning product - blue food coloring!

Um...I'm not sure that it will clean the toilet but it will probably help hide the stains. :)

It's true, bleach will harm the rubber seals inside your toilet tank, so if those little disks that they sell to drop into the tank contain bleach, I don't recommend them.

White vinegar does work well in the toilet bowl and I suspect you could even pour some into the tank itself if you wanted to. I have also heard that a can of Coke will clean your toilet bowl nicely. Never tried that myself though. :)

YUCK...your toilet is got to be THE dirtiest and germ containing thing in your house. You want to scrub that thing, inside and out, to the best of your ability, with whatever method of cleanser you choose for it to be clean.

You wouldn't use your hands as toilet paper and then just pour some bleach, or blue cleaner on them. You'd scrub the heck out of them with the cleaner. Same thing with the toilet bowl.

Get a good toilet brush, choose whatever cleaning method you want (vinegar, lysol, etc) pour the stuff in, let it sit for a bit, then use that toilet brush to the fullest. Use a sponge or rag with cleanser on the entire outside of the bowl as well.

I suddenly have the urge to go scrub my toilets now...ha ha ha...

Personally, if and when I use bleach, I dilute it extremely well with water although the vinegar is great too! The bathroom needs to remain as clean and safe as possible because I have a 2 year old that likes to go in there and poke around. Mainly she goes for the toothpaste. I generally avoid toxic products for the safety of the three of us...because I also have a dog. Safety first!

Actually, your computer mouse and keyboard are dirtier than your toilet. I just read this thing (I wish I could find it because i can't remember the numbers) that ranked the nine germiest things in your house. The toilet ranked lowest. It's constantly rinsed out from flushing. The dirtiest was kitchen sponges I think, then the faucet, then the kitchen sink, followed by the computer mouse, keyboard, something else, then the toliet handle, seat then the bowl.
That's not to say that your bowl doesnt' need scrubbing, but don't forget the seat and handle!!!

Gross!! I had heard about the kitchen sponge and sink before. Pretty gross isn't it?? Now I'm going to have to start spraying my keyboard and mouse with lysol spray!!

Thanks Sonya, I appreciate the new info.
