Yes, many of the themes with some of the open source products are really bad. I
didn't think of it as a "guy" thing, but you may be right.
My thought was that they were done by programmers rather than graphic designers,
so they don't look as elegant.
My site is done in Geeklog,
another open source system meant for setting up online communities and portals.
When I showed the main Geeklog site to clients, they hated the look of Geeklog,
but when they saw my site and some of my other clients designed in Geeklog, they
thought it was great.
So a good eye for graphic design as well as programming skills is needed for
these type of sites or it may be necessary to hire someone with the skills if
you don't have them in-house.
