Lamar Morgan 954-603-7901 | | I know this a network about ezines, but I cannot help but wonder if there may be some published authors out there who have actually published a book - not an ebook - but a real bood that could be autographed and give as a door prise at a mixer. Has anyone here done that sort of thing?

Kurt Schweitzer | | Lamar,
By that definition (a real book that could be autographed and given as a door prize) I guess I qualify.
Even if you add a press run of thousands of copies.
I used to work at Xerox on the development team for DocuTech (a large, 130 pages per minute copier/printer). I created one of the test documents used to test the binder/finisher. Except for the copies that went home to be used as coloring books for the kids, all of the books we printed were trashed.
If you include self-published books, then anyone who has an e-book can be a "published author" for under $50. Just send me your e-book (up to 500 pages) and cover art and I'll have it printed, bound, and shipped to you. And it won't be with a tape binding (like we used on DocuTech) either, but either a Wire-O or Perfect binding (just like the paperbacks in the book stores).
Is that what you mean by a published author? Or do you mean someone whose books have an ISBN and are published by a company that also sells them and sends the author royalty checks?

Lamar Morgan 954-603-7901 | | Kurt,
The reason I asked about published authors is because I would like to help those published authors spread their message through my merchant association. As you know, book signings are a popular form of marketing. Well, on June 18th, my town celebrates with its annual western festival. My merchant association will be conducting a mixer at the Calpine Visitor Center and giving out door prizes. One of those prizes could be the autographed copy of a book by someone on this network. However, rather than send a pre0-signed book, I would prefer the author send flyers about their books and one form (in a SASE) which would be sent to them containg the contact information of the door-prize winner. In this way, the author could really personalize his comments when providing the autograph.
Did I hear you right? For $50 you can create a hard-bound book from an e-book that is up to 500 pages long? If I sent you an Acrobat PDF file via email or on a CD, could you easily create a hard-bound book? What if I wanted more than just one? Does the price/copy go down as the quantity increases? What about books under 100 pages? Lower price since fewer pages?

D Kai Wilson | | Sorry to steal this out from under Kurt, but you can do it yourself for much less: http://cafepress.com and http://lulu.com are two sites that allow you to create books from PDF files. You need to be at least a little layout savvy but I'm sure Kurt and myself can help (along with others) if need it be.

lisa micklin | | Hi All-
While this conversation is interesting, I'm going to ask you to take it off list at this time, so that we can get back to discussing ezine publishing, which is the focus of the cafe.
