What eats up your timeViews: 624

Clare Evans
Hi everyone,

How's your week going? I was after some information for a workshop I'm putting together and would like to get your input. Many people have too much to do and too little time in which to do it. Do you have the same problem in your business or life? What takes up your time, what keeps you 'busy'? I'd love to hear your top time issues and problems.

Let me know your thoughts.

Thanks,

Clare

Often times what keeps me the busiest is running in circles trying to do the things that need to be done. I will start gathering the laundry then realize the bathroom needs cleaning so I stop gathering and start cleaning only to realize the baking soda is in the kitchen so I stop cleaning to get the baking soda and realize the dish washer needs emptying so I start to empty the dishwasher only to realize that I need a dish towel and don't have any clean ....then I remember I was going to do the laundry!!!

It seems I am so overwhelmed with "the little things" that I don't finish anything and spend the time runing in circles.

At the end of the day I have 7 half finished chores

I have lots of time, just wasted

I agree about going in circles. Something else that wastes a lot of mine is looking for stuff -- or knowing where something is but having to get to it. I live in a very small house and usually have to pile things on things. For example, last night I networked my old computer to my new computer which meant taking up double the space on my work table which meant I had to move all the stuff I need, but there's no place to put all the stuff. And yes, I purge, purge, purge. sigh . . .

I used to do the "circle thing" too, until I realized I was doing it. I just started to MAKE myself stick to the first chore, and I found things go SO much smoother. It's just a matter of making it a habit!

My big time waster is email! I spend more time reading email, as if I'm an addict! I just can't stop. I know I need to work on my web site, or search for places to advertise, but there I sit, for hours, just sifting through it.

BTW, I haven't introduced myself yet: My name is Tammy Dobbs and I'm from Ontario, Canada. I am an associate for Watkins, and just joined ICanCraft.com as well (hope it's okay to mention that). I'm just learning to organize myself better, and I see this group is going to be very helpful. Thanks!

The INTERNET! That is my major time waster. When I am in a office where I dont have access to the net I get a lot more work done, but since I also WAH I am tempted to come on ryze and chat or like recently my partner and I are starting a new venture with gift baskets so I spent hours and days actually researching for vendors etc.

As to you all who mentioned that you feel you are "going around in circles" you said you go to clean the bathroom but realize that the cleaning stuff is in the kitchen, you than go to the kitchen and realize dishes need to be washed etc.
Heres a tip, ORGANIZE ;) what I mean is this, get a
organizing basket or caddy and place all cleaning stuff in it to carry with you from room to room than you will stay in the room you are cleaning and have all that you need right there.

What eats up my time??? Hmmm....I have to admit that I don't have a lot of time eaters on my plate. I spend the amount of time needed on each item on my to do list each day that is necessary to accomplish it adequately. Then I move on to the next item. etc.

I don't read junk emails. I may get side tracked while cleaning the house, but at the end of the day I will go around and finish all the half done things I started, so when I go to bed I actually acomplished quite a bit.

Here's something that my family does, faithfully, which really helps around the house. Each evening, after some tv time, but before bed time for the kids, we all go around the house collecting our own stuff, putting it away where it goes, loading the dish washer, etc. When we go to bed the house looks all tidy. This rarely takes us longer than 20 minutes.

Also, since my kids know they are expected to do this at the end of the day they actually put their things away more during the day, so they aren't working very hard at night. Hubby even has to go around and put away everything he used or took out. It really helps keep the house tidy all the time. And I sleep so much better knowing I don't have to get up and deal with the house.

I do spend a lot of time on the internet, but I feel that the time I spend there is needed. I tend to not spend unnecessary time on it.

I used to have friends who sucked up a lot of my time, but I learned to say "good-bye" when it was time to get on with my day.

My teenage son times himself. I'm not sure where he got this habit, but it really works. He'll time himself for homework, chores, music lessons, etc. Everything really. I think he started it years ago for fun...but now it's helped him streamline his day very well. I do this sometimes when my list is very very long and I really need to get through most of it.

Basically, I just do what I can every day, with the most important things getting done first. The rest rolls over to tomorrow. I don't stress over any of it. It really isn't worth the stress.

Kerry
