Vaibhav Gangan | | Hi,
I upload PDF files on my website for my customers to download and read. When they click on the file link on my website, the PDF file opens INSIDE the web browser. I want the file to open IN PDF Reader rather than in web browser. My PDF file's settings are such that if the file is opened in PDF Reader, the file automatically opens in full screen mode, giving best results to the customer. However, when this file opens through browser, it obviously does not open in full screen mode. What is the solution?
The only solution I can think of is asking my customers to first download and save the file, and then oepn it from their PDF Reader. But this is not the best solution.
Thanks a ton for your help.

Garland Coulson | | Hello Vaibhav,
I noticed this happening as well. Looks like the
newer versions of Acrobat Reader must be set that way automatically.
Probably because of Adobe's push to more closely integrate its products with the
web.
I can change the setting in Reader, but I don't see a way
while publishing to force the document to open in Reader if your readers have
the setting at the default..
Is there a reason why having the pdf file open in the
browser is less satisfactory than opening in Reader?
I would suggest you put in a support ticket to Adobe to ask
them about it. You could also try some Acrobat discussion forums.

Michelle Lee | | Hi Vibhav,
Have you tried the following?
before uploading your PDF file:
1. Open it in Acrobat.
2. Choose File > Document Info > Open...
3. In the Window Options section, check the box for "Open in Full Screen
Mode"
4. Save the PDF file, then upload it to your server.
Hope this helps some.
Regards,
Michelle Lee

Dean H. | | Since, we're giving out advice on Adobe and PDFs, then I have question as well :)
When I click on a hyperlink on a PDF, it will open up a browser in IE to that new link. How can I adjust it so that the hyperlink will open in Firefox browser? Anyone? Help?

Craig Kiessling | | Hi Dean,
Does that happen on all other links as well, as for example, with a link you find in an (Outlook) email message?
If so, then it may be that you have set Firefox as your default Internet app. or something.
In situations like these, whether the answer is yes or no, you'll want to look through all the configuration settings of both programs in question to find what is making this happen.
It's a long arduous process to do it that way, but its the best choice by far - because you'll solve the problem, and learn a helluva lot on the way as well.Private Reply to Craig Kiessling |

Vaibhav Gangan | | Hi,
Thanks for the response.
The reason I want the file to open in PDF Reader is because, I have set the file to open in Full Screen mode so that the contents can be read on-screen comfortably. In web-browser, it does not open in Full Screen mode, and as a result it does not have the same impact.
I spoke with Acrobat support staff. They were unable to help. They said this will require some script writing and suggested that I speak with some professional programmers and pay them to write a script for me.
Unfortunately, the decision of programme to use to open a file is client-side and not server-side.
I guess I'll just have to live with it. Thanks for responding. Private Reply to Vaibhav Gangan |

Hi,
Thanks for the response.
I have already set the file to open in Full Screen mode so that the contents can be read on-screen comfortably. Unfortunately, the decision of programme to use to open a file is client-side and not server-side.

Michelle Lee | | Hi Dean,
Re-install the adobe reader. It will detect firefox and install the required plug-in. no other third-party plugin is required.
Vaibhav,
Sorry to hear that. I will look around and try to find a script for you.

Dean H. | | Craig, In Outlook, the hyperlink will open to Firefox. It's just Adobe that opens up in IE. I'll look into Michelle' suggestion. Thanks.

Christopher Panlasigui | | suggestion!
first thing to consider, does costumer prefer opening the file through their browser or downloading the file ? ActiveX - the reason for this matter(adobe acrobat control for activeX), in short it is the user's browser settings wether it is enabled or not that is responsible wether to view, save, or cancel the link.
check this out -->
sample: http://www.finedrafts.com/pdfsample.pdf http://www.finedrafts.com/whatis-ActiveX.txt
one of the solution is having the link direct to your public ftp folder(assuming you have one and the pdf file within that folder)

Vaibhav Gangan | | Dear Lalit,
Thank you for trialling a file download from our website.
The reason it opened in your acrobat is because, your acrobat settings are such. Most people's PDF Reader is set to open links in web browser by default. That's the whole problem. Whether a file will be opened in browser or PDF is decided by client-side (user's PC decides), not server-side.
Thanks for trying though. Most appreciated Vaibhav Private Reply to Vaibhav Gangan |

Vaibhav Gangan | | Thank you Chris.
Yes, I realise that user decided whether the file will open in browser or Reader.
Given varying level of computer skills of my site visitors, I don't want to leave it to them to take that extra step and change their PDF settings.
FTP is a good idea but I don't have one right now. But it's definitely an option worth considering. I appreciate your help. Cheers! Private Reply to Vaibhav Gangan |

Durga Smitha | | Hi Vaibhav,
Did you try opening the file in a pop-up window. That might be an alternative to full window display. Pop-up blockers might be an issue but you can place a message warning the users about that.

Vaibhav Gangan | | Dear Smitha,
Thanks for the message. I personally detest pop-up. I would rather continue with the existing status than have the quality e-zine open in a pop up window in a sneaky way.
By pop-up, if you mean opening a new window, then it is already doing that. Thanks again for spending your time. Cheers!

Christopher Panlasigui | | your webhost should have the ftp services included. I do webhosting and FTP is one of the services included. If you are interested email me at chris@finedrafts.com or call me at 212-673-4244
Unfortunately my website is still in the middle of construction, the reason for the long delay was because i wanted every user end must be able to navigate into my site with ease. Private Reply to Christopher Panlasigui |
