My sister is working on a first-of-a-kind project. Without going the Hollywood big production route, she is co-producing a movie with no big budget for marketing. The plan is to go word of mouth.

The project is actually pretty cool, but I'm subjective because I'm proud of my sister and I love reality tv, so I'm wondering what ya'll think of it and if you think it can be done (successfully).

Basically, it is going to be the first "reality" movie, similar to American Idol, where people get to vote on elements of the plot, props, actors, movie poster, music, etc. Then we go to the movie to see the finished product and find out which concepts/features received the most votes. In order to vote, people register on the website to become a Producer. Then you are able to help produce the movie by voting (like American Idol, this is all free). If you are interested in learning more about producing a movie, you can also participate in web conferences with the director, producers, casting director, wardrobe designer, makeup artist, etc., view production journals, learn about the technical "stuff" and watch behind-the-scenes video footage of the actual shooting on location. A certain number of people that register will also gain some of the financial proceeds from the film.

Do you think a movie project like this can pick up enough steam without the big Hollywood funding?

Thanks for your opinions,
Heidi, the sister of the co-producer for...

Heidi --

First, congratulations to your sister. It sounds like a really fun project.

Yes, I do think this type of movie could be marketed via word of mouth. Remember the Blair Witch Project? It was mostly marketing that way.

The key to success will be to make sure she's done her research with a target market and go after them so they can get the ball rolling. It seems the younger generations (35 and under) embrace the reality show model better than older generations (but that's just my opinion).

Once she's identified a market, she needs to put together a strong marketing plan that reflects the actions and tasks she will accomplish to move the message along.

Best regards,

I think it is an interesting concept - but be careful about promising proceeds from the movie without experienced legal advice form an entertainment law specialist. There are risks of introducing serious security law violations that should be looked at very carefully.

Best,

Barry

Two really good points. There has been a lot of thought and preparation regarding target audience and the minimum age requirement is lower than one would normally anticipate (age 13, with parental consent) because the younger than 18 crowd is so important to this project.

Entertainment attorneys have been involved with everything from naming rights to payout of revenues. I know it sounds crazy, but they really want this to be "by the people" and "for the people". Including revenue share.

It seems like they've covered their bases from a business perspective. My concern is that they feel so much passion about this concept and they sincerely believe everyone else will, too.

I have gotten a couple other responses about what a great idea it is, too. I've been on the site that launched today and voted on the lead character's dog and which car I think he should drive. I haven't read enough about the characters to vote on that yet.

Thanks for your great advice,
Heidi,

Dear Heidi,

There is a company in California called Public Media Works (www.pubicmediaworks.com) that has been trying to do something like this outside the studio system. My understanding is that they have had mixed success to date.
However they do have some financing so it is a bit different.

These are very experimental times. I applaud anyone who is taking a risk.

Cheers,

Brad
