Lamar Morgan 954-603-7901 | | If you have a Wi-Fi PDA with Skype VOIP software on it, do you really need a cell phone? I am thinking it is a little redundant to have both. Any comments?

Chris Young | | Hi Lamar,
Wi-Fi with VOIP is the future, I doubt that it will be driven by Skype though as there are other more mainstream options for the technology that the carriers are looking at.
The main challenge is coverage...yes you can hop on to open wi-fi networks but there is no guarantee you will find one right now.
The Carriers are pushing Wi-Fi Max which has a coverage footprint of several kilometers and will serve urban areas quite well.
The other issue with wi-fi is that you need to track individual access points. There is an excellent tool to do that at Splitbits.com
It is also possible to get a wi-fi phone that is supposed to work better than your pda.
Anyhow...If it works for you, go with it.
Cheers,
Chris

Is not Wi-Fi with VOIP not already here via Skype? I have both Skype and vSkype on my computer. I have the ability to make Internet phone calls and do video conferencing desktop-to-desktop. But, I am think about getting a PDA that has Wi-Fi access and using that to make phone calls while I am on-the-road. My thinking is that this would be a more cost-effective way to proceed than getting a standard cell phone. Plus, I would get a lot of additional benefits with a PDA as opposed to the standard cell phone. I am particularly interested in PalmOne's LifeDrive Mobile Manager. If I understand the literature correctly, it has 4 Gigs of memory. That's huge. It has Wi-Fi. It has Bluetooth capabilities. That means I could not only get online remotely, but control a projector via my PDA. Unless I am mistaken, having the Skype software on it means I could engage in either live phone calls or a video conference with people all over the world. And, I would never have to load a file up to a website to make that happen. I would simply open the file on my PDA.
Now, I do have a concern here. I am told that Skype has a PocketPC version of its software for handheld computers. Is PocketPC a different OS than Windows Mobile Media OS? I think the PalmOne's LifeDrive Mobile Manager uses the Windows Mobile Media OS. I hope there is not a compatibility issue here. What do you think?
