In my free
e-book, "Questions to Ask Your Web Designer," I harp on the importance of
registering your own domain name and keeping your contact information current.
Here is a real life event that shows how
critical this is.
I and over 50,000 other people use
Instant Buzz
for free Internet advertising.
Instant Buzz
was started by Mike Chen and later sold to Mike Filisame. But apparently,
when the sale happened, the domain name information wasn't changed...
As I heard the story, during a 4 day marketing
campaign, an overeager member spammed some people and they complained to the
registrar of the domain name. The registrar tried to contact the
registered owner, Mike Chen, but the email address wasn't current. When
they couldn't reach the owner, the site was shut down.
The site remained down for nearly a month
while the new owner was scrambling to deal with the spam complaint and to move
the ownership of the domain name to himself. This resulted in 1,000s of
dollars of lost business for the company and it's members.
